I am 62 years old, diagnosed 5 months ago PSA 4917. My doctors said they could do nothing, but suggested castration. I decided to try alternative treatment. I lost 35kg's in the 1st 3 months and have not been back for a PSA test, my weight seems to have stabilized.(still very thin and no muscle mass) I have been on glyconutrients for 10 days and the only pain I have is in my shoulder blades. I pass water almost every hour and have no problems in that regard, other than the frequency of course. I had a growth on my left side below my ribcage which seems to be going down. Can anyone tell me what that could be? Is it normal to have pain in the shoulder blades? I was very very fatigued in the beginning with not much appetite, but that is over and I eat very well. (organic, no sugar,and many other changes to my diet) My only complaint is the pain in the shoulder blades. Has anyone else gone this route?

At age 62, I think I would get another doctor's opinion. The shoulder blade pain may be from bone metastasis but you would need a bone scan to know for sure. Good luck to you & welcome to this forum. I think you will find interesting & valuable information here to help you along the way.

Welcome. Hormone therapy / chemical castration /androgen deprivation works for some time. It varies. I would consider that instead of any surgery.
I would suggest a 2nd opinion with a medical oncologist.
I am using a vegan diet and supplements but my condition is not major now.

If your doctors said they couldn't do anything you need to get new doctors. There are drugs that will knock the cancer back and will work with your dietary approach to give the beast a one-two punch. The diet is a good idea but, by itself, it won't be enough for very long.

The pain in your shoulder blades could be the cancer (prostate cancer goes to the bones) but it could also be something else. Either way it can be treated. But only if you go back to the doctor.

Do you have any medical insurance? I get a feeling that may be an issue here...

We do not have medical aid. Our hospital Groote Schuur Cape Town(Chris Barnard 1st heart transplant) is not willing to do a bone scan or any ADT all they say is "castration". The scan is very expensive and so is the ADT if done privately. I would rather use the money on trying the glyconutrients for the next few months. If I do not see any significant change by Jan 2014 I will try the ADT.

Have you had a prostate biopsy? I would at least do that regardless of cost issues so you know for sure what you are dealing with..There are several types of PC, some much more treatable than others..You need this information.

Yes, the ADT drugs are ridiculously expensive. Castration offers an inexpensive solution and it is the most effective form of ADT..You could try Casodex (Bicalutamide) an inexpensive ADT drug that will at least slow down the progression of your probable cancer while you sort out future treatments..

This might seem hopeless but it's not..Investigate all the avenues that are available to you. Where there is a WILL there is a WAY.. Best of luck to you.....

See patient histories at www.yananow.org for what patients have done and how they responded or are doing still, 900+ listed. Could be useful for you to compare or find guys whom did orchiectomy or whatevers. You are dealing with a mega dragon right now, I would seek any treatments that are known to be useful. If not treated soon, you could be looking at debilitation issues or worse and maybe all to soon. Ribs are known to be bones where PCa is somewhat commonly found, you may have a mass causing that bump. Bone pains are associated with PCa, especially in high psa levels. They can radiated bones envolved to stop pain issues, to some extent. This is highly serious risk with the info you have mentioned.  Hope you can get help, doing the orchiectomy does help stop fueling PCa, and others have done well on this protocol.

I suggest you do orchiectomy, as advised. Afterwards ,you can do a thorough research into alternative treatments to slow your cancer, there are some, but at this point orchiectomy will save your life, and you need to act very soon. Best to you.

Mach 1,

You might look into Bicalutamide (brand name Casodex). It is an anti-androgen that has been found to be effective (sometimes) with advanced prostate cancer, and (possibly more important to you) the patent has run out (at least in the US) and the price has dropped precipitously. And, as your doctors suggested, orchiectomy is also a treatment that might prolong your life for many years.

You might also ask your doctors if there are any clinical trials going on that you could participate in.
