Biopsy

I was diagnosed with PC in 2008 from a Biopsy that showed low grade prostate cancer in one per cent of left lobe. The program I have followed has been PSA Test every 6 months and Yearly Biopsy. Since my first Biopsy I have had 3 that have showed no prostate cancer cells but pre cancer cells. I would like to just have the PSA test every 6 months and only do the Biopsy if PSA increases instead of yearly biopsy. The urologist doesn't recommend this and I welcome any input on this issue. Thank My PSA has ranged in the 7-8 range.

I think even Johns Hopkins, the biggest proponent of the annual biopsy, is considering moving off that position. Klotz believes that annual is overkill, and after the first couple show no change, one every 5 years or so may be adequate.

One thing to consider is having an mpMRI (3T w/endorectal coil)/US-guided or a color doppler US guided biopsy to determine once and for all if there is evidence of cancer. Perhaps your original biopsy slide was misread?

Another option is Dr Coleman at MSK is doing a clinical trial of focal electroporation that includes the above mpMRI/US fusion.

Negative, I am being followed for AS at the New Jersey Cancer Institute. My Oncologist recommended a biopsy in 2 years from the last but he left it up to me if I am comfortable with it. I have been speaking with a Dr. at MSKCC who said they are now going 2 years on there AS program.

Did you Uro give any reasons for not recommending your plan? Doesn't sound unreasonable to me but I am not a doctor - just some guy on a forum.

It's great to see someone having success with AS. There are more guys out there that could benefit from your experience.

Hi Negative, If I can ask your age and results of the DRE(s)? Your doc certainly has a lot more information and expertise to make the call, but it may be worthwhile to get a second opinion from another urologist.
