surgery coming up, viagra before?

I am having a robotic prostatectomy on Jan. 6th. I read a post last week that said you can take Viagra before (2-weeks 20mg) your surgery to help keep you stimulated to quicken your recover (ED) from the surgery. Does anyone have information as to weather this is worth it or not considering the cost $300 for 100mgx10 of Viagra?

My guess is this is part of preconditioning. I was told to start pelvic floor exercises prior to my RRP and I presume one could do similar pre-conditioning with the penis. Prior to my op I did ensure that I had at least 3-4 good natural erections a week and it appeared to have paid dividends as my ED recovery post op is "remarkable" (to quote my URO) considering I had one bundle of nerves removed.

Mulhall (2009) in "Saving your sex life" suggests PDE5 inhibitors to be taken two weeks prior to the op to assist with "endothelial conditioning, whereby the endothelium (which is the lining of the erection spaces) is in someway protected by pre-treatment" p100. He admits this is a novel approach - and is only substantiated, at present, in animal research in his lab. He further suggests a low-dose of PDE5 inhibitors

My POST OP recovery regimen includes splitting a 100 mg Viagra in FOUR and to take that on an "empty stomach" (key point) in the evenings on 4-weekdays and 1x100mg at the weekend followed by a wank (assisted or otherwise). So far I've had reasonable success!

As suggested by DavidG -- consult with your doctor (or get a second opinion, I did!)

I would say strongly, follow the lead and direction of your surgeon. This is no right or wrong protocol to what you are asking. Some feel strongly that you shouldn't, and other surgeons are all about it.

Be a nice, easy direct question to ask your surgeon.

I would ask your Uro. I started before and am continuing for three weeks since. There have been "signs of life" in the last few days. In fact I think my little friend was trying to do a little wake up in the middle of the night last night.

As far as cost, if your doctor wants you to take Viagra, get him/her to prescribe generic sildenafil 20mg. It is MUCH less expensive. Even when you might need to take 5 (100mg) it is still cheaper. I also found out that my insurance plan will cover it if my doctor pre-certifies it.

My surgeon also did not recommend Viagra before my surgery, but he did tell me to do my kegels. He gave me Viagra for only one month after surgery because my erection started to improved. Make sure your surgeon had great experience with nerve sparing surgery. I was very lucky to have gone to an expert, and experience surgeon <snip>. My result were beyond my expectations.

I've edited out the identity of your surgeon since it doesn't seem germane. I believe the original poster has already selected a surgeon and rule three suggests we respect that decision. When someone asks for a recommendation you are free to tell us how happy you are with your guy. But you can't just stop random strangers on the street like the ancient mariner and launch into a testimonial.

It may be appropriate to let “ ErikG13 ” know that in the past this web site has experienced quite a bit of “spam” (akin to advertisement) which was traced to one particular surgeon. Newcomers to HW would periodically "pop-in" singing the praises of this particular surgeon and their results, which oddly all seemed to follow essentially the same “script ,” as if written & distributed by the surgeon’s public relations people…and this doctor did, apparently, spend plenty of time with public relations people! It turns out that indeed the surgeon was “seeding” the site by telling some of his patients to go to HealingWell/Prostate Cancer site and post about him.  (I wonder what they got in return, or if it was out of the goodness of their heart.) The “spam” (unseemly advertisement) was uniformly rejected by moderators and members alike as a repulsive act. That’s simply the history of what has transpired…

I know that some public figures are better than others at managing their online reputation but if Dr Samadi's PR firm's social networking guys can't do better than that they should be canned. Dr Samadi is a controversial figure and it is at least as likely that, should such spam appear, it was manufactured by his detractors. We should warn Eric of that as well.
