142, I'm not trying to be argumentative, but your comment above about
religion led me to pose a question. The rules prohibit
posts of an overtly political or religious nature (ie. proselyting). (sic...should be "proselytizing.")
Proselytizing refers to trying to convert someone from one religious belief to another, or from one religion to another.
If the comment is simply a statement to the effect that prostate cancer has caused someone to reflect more deeply on their mortality and to start going to church more or to become more spiritual, that is not proselytizing. It's simply a statement which anyone can accept or reject as not applicable to their own experience.
By absolutely excluding references to religion from our discourse, we are essentially espousing an agnostic or atheistic point of view to the exclusion of religion. That has always seemed unfair to me, but so be it. Yes, I know that discussions can balloon out of control, but I just don't see how it can possibly be "wrong" for someone to say that, among other changes, a cancer diagnosis leads some people to reexamine their attitudes about many areas of life, including religion. No attempt to convert, no attempt to argue for the existence/non-existence of God, just a straightforward statement of personal experience. Heck, I wouldn't have the slightest objection if someone were to say that the diagnosis led them to abandon metaphysical concerns and adopt a purely carpe diem philosophy. And I'm sure that happens.
Feel free to delete this, but it's something I have never understood about HealingWell, though I fully understand that we all need to abide by Peter's rules.
