2013 was an excellent year for me but of course the three years preceeding it were among the worst of my life. not THE WORST but right up there. anyhow my wife and I ended a great year with a great vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii, and I eye 2014 with guarded optimism :-). enjoy.

I have been to the big island two times now and I loved it but my photos never turned out so beautiful. You are a very talented photographer.

I hope the next three years make up for the three before 2013!

It's been about 20 years since we visited the Islands. Think we'll have to go back.

Great photos Ed. Interesting shot of the highway. Wonder if they ever had an accident on the one lane bridge?

Montee -- thank you. saddle road was originally built by the military to join both sides of the island. the road is treacherous but that section can be avoided by taking the new Daniel Inouye highway. there is actually a series of one-lane bridges on that road -- why they built it that way I don't know. accidents? heck yeah. it's a killer. I drove the seven hills in good and bad weather, and when there's foul weather or fog saddle road is one of the worst roads that I've ever driven.

we had to go from kona to hilo several times because we stayed on the kona side but had to go to hilo for the helicopter tour and to visit volcanoes NP. I was cancelled three times before I went up because of a storm that dumped 23" of rain in two days.

RCS -- thank you. no the turtles sleep on land and are very vulnerable when doing so. they don't exactly pick the most remote beaches. when they are crawl up on Waikoloa beach for a snooze you get the opportunity to see man and his hellspawn at their idiotic worst. you see this upset me more than it did the snoozing turtles cool.

thank you everyone. at xmas dinner I announced that I was going to get pictures of sea turtles on land . of course I got ribbed and about it. the next day I saw my first snoozing sea turtle five minutes after I had gotten to the beach!

Thanks, Ed. We have three weeks booked for this December. One week on Oahu, two on the Big Island. Your excellent photos just help me with the anticipatory drooling. My gut tells me this is going to be a rough year for us.
