Ladies & Gentlemen --
After a steadily climbing PSA, I had a "traditional biopsy" in May in which the results were benign. My PSA kept creeping up, however, and so I asked for -- demanded, actually -- an MRI, which was conducted last week.
Needless to say, I was upset and stunned to hear from the radiologist that I had prostate cancer in the transition zone "that is aggressive and at least a Gleason 7." This diagnosis was rendered WITHOUT the results of a biopsy, much to the horror of several other physicians who are friends but not prostate cancer specialists.
Accordingly, I am having an expedited MRI biopsy in the morning, January 16th. But I did want to posit two questions for discussion:
1) Isn't it unusual to have a diagnosis, especially a distressing one, rendered from a radiologist without the benefit of any biopsy and without (an) opinion(s) from oncologists and pathologists?
2) Am I overreacting at this stage? I have read and heard from numerous sources and prostate cancer victims with widely divergent views on my particular situation, so my head is spinning out of control at this juncture.
Sincerely --
A 60-year-old Virginia Man
