My dad, age 81, was diagnosed with prostate cancer (Gleason score 9) on August 15, 2013. We agonized about what treatment would be most effective including LDR, HDR, HIFU, Proton Beam, EBRT, and/or hormonal. In addition, we consulted with Seattle, Cleveland Clinic, UCLA, USC, and Loma Linda Cancer Center. Although we reside in Los Angeles and are blessed with some of the best medical care and research centers in the world, we ended up at the Chicago Prostate Cancer Center with Dr. Brian Moran, in part due comments on this site. We are convinced we made the right decision.

We flew to Chicago from Los Angeles on Sunday, January 12th and were warmly greeted on Monday morning at the clinic. A volume study was completed in less than an hour. Dr. Moran’s team is both efficient and competent and patiently answered all of our questions. As instructed, we arrived at the clinic at 8am on Thursday. Dad was in surgery by 9am and at noon we were eating Italian food at a local restaurant. To date, there has been no pain or side effects (other than more frequent urination). I would strongly encourage anyone looking for treatment to consider Dr. Moran.

I don't know if you're in CA or IL presently, hopefully CA with our Midwest Polar Vortex (winter). I did some investigating of Dr. Moran about a year ago and found the same results, when I called and talked with him he asked me where I lived, when I told him, he gave me the name of a closer doctor. I did and am presently under that doctor's care. I was very impressed by Dr. Moran's openness and even his willingness to review my case at no charge if I wanted to send him any info. I asked my doctor here if he was familiar with Dr. Moran, he said yes and he felt he was very good. My best to you and your father.

Dr. Moran administered my brachytherapy on May 26, 2010 and I have never regretted choosing that procedure and having Doc Moran implant the pellets. In a few more months, I'll be hitting the four year mark and my PSA results have been great with last one taken one year ago at the Albuquerque VA hospital which provided 0.257. I'll be getting another lab work up there on Jan 31st and am confident results will still be at the zero mark. I cannot say enough good about Dr Moran, his entire staff and his Westmont (Chicago) facility where I was truly treated like royalty.
Have truly suffered NO side effects with the exception of a small amount of radiation proctitis in the low end of my colon which amounted to almost nothing. If I had to do it all over again, I would certainly choose the Chicago Prostate Center in Westmont, IL.
I live in the far South end of the State of Colorado and the round trip drive to Westmont, IL was certainly worth the trip.

Just an update, it's been over a year and Dad is doing great. His most recent PSA is 0.01. We feel pretty lucky to have found Dr. Moran and this website. Thanks for your support.

I too was most impressed by Dr Brian Moran at Chicago Prostate center when I saw him twice last summer before I ultimately decided on SBRT rather than brachy.

That had nothing to do with Dr Moran who was great, including a joint conference with him and UCSF's Mack Roach.

It was 5 fractions rather than 7-9 weeks that drive my decision but Dr. Brian Moran is top notch straight shooter and I am happy your dad's experience matched that expectation.

tami123, thanks so much for coming back to share the good news / update on your father. It's reports like this that are so helpful for the new guys - gives them hope and something positive to look forward to. I was also treated by Dr. Moran and share your feelings about the professionalism, experience and genuine "caring" exuded by Dr. Moran and his entire staff. I just had my 2-1/2 year follow-up and life is indeed great! Continued best to you both.

One thing I forgot to mention is that Dad’s PSA was only 3.1 at the time of diagnosis. His initial biopsy was negative. He had another test, however, which is a more sensitive genetic marker that raised concerns. The test is called the PCA3 http://www.usrf.org/news/PCA3/PCA3.html

Based on those results, we headed to UCLA to get an MRI guided biopsy with Dr. Marks which turned out to be positive (Gleason score 9). Then we headed to Chicago based on the comments on this site. Hopefully, this will help others in this situation.

I had Dr. Moran do my implants as well. I am highly satisfied with where I'm at with the results. I am 5 years out now.

It's been another year and Dad's most recent PSA is 0.03 (YaY!). We feel pretty lucky to have found this website. We did, however, have a scare after Dad was diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2015 following a routine colonoscopy. Thankfully, we caught it very early and found another incredible doctor. Thanks everyone on this site for your support and sage advice.

Congrats to your Dad for another year of great results with his PCa. Sorry to hear about the colon cancer Dx and hoping that treatment goes well also. Best to you both.

This website helped me so much. I'm sorry to announce my father passed. Not from prostate cancer, it was from pneumonia related to the virus. We found Dr. Moran on this site, which if anyone is looking for a doctor was a life changer.

I am so sorry for your loss. I also want to think you for coming back here to post about your dad's passing and how this site was helpful to you. Healingwell was so incredibly important for me as well, which is why I'm still here.

I also want to offer my condolences Tami - may your father rest in peace. . . . Thanks for sharing this thread that my goodness started some 7 years ago, and also for letting any newbies out here that are going through the process of deciding on what treatment to go with, about Dr. Moran. I've also promoted him due to all of the comments made here and then some - and now 9 years out I'm still 'undetectable' and no SE's.

My prayers are with you and your family.
