Great news Todd. As an early retiree myself I can tell you that it's ALL GOOD. The first few months are always the hardest, but that will pass. Enjoy!

Interesting the timing of Todd's thread.   Today we have a partners meeting to start working on a new office lease.   Current one expires in August 2016.   My easy decision is that I won't sign on to the new seven year lease as I will be selling my practice to coincide with the lease expiration in 2016.   Thus I calculate I am at day 870 on the countdown.   Plenty of time to get ready for the EDIS club as John mentioned.   When we returned from the GFMPH cruise last year I announced to my wife that from now on every weekend is a vacation and it starts with Martinis at 4:00 each Friday afternoon.  So far one of the best decisions of my life.    Here's to liesure.

I've been retired since December 2007, so that puts me about 7 years into the post-work lifestyle, and, believe me, it's all good!

One thing in particular that I noticed pretty quickly once I was into retirement, something I guess I always knew in the back of my mind but never really gave it much conscious thought, was that, once you're retired, you have complete control of your life!

Think about it. When you're young, your parents basically own you. You have to live by their rules and do what they say as long as you're their kid, until you get to around age 18 or so. Then you go to college, get a job, maybe go into the military, etc., which is good, because then you gain a little independence for yourself. But even then something or somebody else still "owns" you in various ways, because you still have to make the grades if you're in school, satisfy the requirements of the job you're at if you're working, be a good soldier, etc.

There's always something or somebody that you're still beholden to. It's all about power, and somebody or something is going it have it over you, as long as you're a part of somebody else's world.

But when you retire, you have the power. You decide when you'll get up in the morning, what you'll eat, what you'll do today. No more "yes sir, no sir" to a boss because now you are the boss! You are in complete charge of your life, and, believe me, it's a great feeling!

Personally, next to knowing there's money in the bank, I would say it's the next great thing about retirement, knowing that I am now entirely in charge of my life, and that is something to really look forward to!

So keep looking forward to your retirement that's coming! Believe me, you're going to love it!

81/Bill - that was a great perspective. A plus on that one. While I didn't "retire" by choice, I find the same thing. I am now in control of 100% of my time. I do what I want when I want, and if I don't want to do something, I simply don't do it. As far as staying busy once retired, I am finding out what many retired warned me about, you can almost become too busy. I should lay around and rest more in my condition, but circumstances keep me busy almost every single day of the week, except for weekends. Always something going on, and I find myself having to prioritizing what I am able to do each day, because I can't do it all.

Most of us here have worked hard long working lives, and part of the point of retiring, is to be able to enjoy the golden years without having to continue working to death.

Retirement is when you start working on saving your second million dollars, having given up on ever gettign the first million.

Seriously you wil be so busy you will wonder how you ever got anything done when you were working.

Fun thread. I haven't calculated that number before. My target date is 11/1/2017 (I'll be 60).

Call me Mr. 1335. (Doesn't have quite the same ring to it, though!)

In the Navy, guys didn't start the countdown until a short timer with less than 365. Then they'd write it everywhere, even on instrument faces with grease pencil.

Red, you brought back fond memories about being "short".

When I finally got out of the Navy, final duty station was the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yards. I walked to the main gate in my civies, carrying my sea bag and some other stuff. The very young looking green Marine stopped me, and bragged about himself, about how he was like 1,200 something days short, how short are you? I looked at my watch, and I never will forget, I said, "Five, four, three, two, one..done", and laughed and walked out the gate. Oh, the good old days.

I did some calculations. Subtracting weekends holidays vacation and GFMPH New York the actual working days are 192

Some of these retired guys are not being 100 % truthful. Have you ever met a retired guy who was too busy to sit down for a cup of coffee, go fishing or golfing because he was in the middle of a project for his wife, or son or daughter, or Mrs. Smith, his next door neighbor ?

Yes, you will not have to work for the man in 299 days, but believe me, there us some kind of informal network that will broadcast the news, Todd is available. Call him with your project.

Kidding a little Todd, but there is a lot of truth to what I am saying. Glad you have the insurance and retirement plan to go ahead with your plans.

Good for you! My wife and I are "wintering" in thr Grenadines; the sun, sky, waters, and drinks are very nice. Hope you two find your muse, or already know what it is. With us, it is travel, however long we can do it. Best to you and your wife.

congratulations todd,

 I'm 56 and entering my 3rd year of retirement, my wife and I love it! more time with grandchildren, traveling, fishing and boating. you are going to love it. If you are anywhere near southeast michigan  stop by this summer for a boat ride and a beer.

Now I'm really jealous. I had planned on retiring last year when I turned 62. but I'm in a family business and the rest of the clan wouldn't let me. Instead I only have to work 3 days a week. They gave me the extra 2 days because they want me to go play golf, re-seal the driveway, paint the house, clean the basement, etc. Hey, wait a minute! That's still work! I've been cheated...once again. Why, I oughta...

Thank you everyone. I am excited to be retired. I really am. It seems things may be falling into place. It is hard however to celebrate when so many struggle with this disease. I struggle sure, but so far not in the way that others have. I read posts where zytiga works for a few months and yet I have just started month #9 on it. I have a hard time coming to healing well when so many of my friends are not doing well at all. It just sucks. Todd

Congratulations Todd.Enjoy your retirement. I retired at age 59 and don't regret it. One thing to remember, you don't spend less when you retire.

Todd, So glad to hear of your retirement plans. With your musical skills you have an opportunity to go to senior living centers, retirement homes, hospitals, etc and bring a moment of sunshine to many who have a great need.
Incidentally, I recently got called back to work after being retire for almost two years. I work mornings toe or three days a week with no responsibilities or administrative duties. It is wonderful!

Sounds like a great plan and we are not far behind. I have a buyer for my business here in Alabama and the house goes on the market this week. We hope to relocate to San Antonio, Texas by June. I want to work a couple of more years to stay busy. I hope you and Mandy will visit us in Texas, San Antonio is a fun city to visit and live. Sorry you aren't making the GFMPH at Sonny's but we will be there.
