MRI with contrast question?

Anyone ever hear of the contrast agent(gadolinium) causing a psa spike? I had a MRI about a month ago and recently had an increase in psa from 2.7 to 3.5 (while on Avodart). Probably not related, but just thought I would ask. May be time to abandon A.S.

I don't remember it ever being brought up while I have been here, but others might have more info. Good luck and keep us posted.

I had a spike after MRI. Quite a big one.

My uro ignored it too. Just wheeled me into OR and had his way with me.

Haven't been the same since.

Thanks for the reply Havanon, how long after the MRI did you have the psa test and how large a spike was it?

I had had many MRI's done with that contrast agent, and it never caused a PSA spike or uptick with me, whether I still had my prostate (long gone) or since. This is a new one to me.

David, I'm just grasping at straws. I recently had the mpMRI, with fairly good results (did find small < 1cm area consistent with g6) and I felt fairly comfortable staying on A.S. Then almost a month later I get this psa spike that had been fairly stable the two years I've been on AS. I was hoping to stay on AS, but it seems I always have something to cloud my judgement.

It was a week or so, jvm. It doubled over the month. But my cancer is aggressive I'm told. Even so it is a big spike.

Maybe the MRI does spike the PSA but never mind. Have another PSA test. What the heck have a biopsy. And if you must have the thing cut oUT then join the crowd

Wouldn't happen to spike because of the fact then stuff that coil up there and I can imagine it doesn't push on your prostate?

I only am mentioning it because I have that scheduled again. I was not thrilled about it the first time. Now I have a reoccurrence so they are doing some of the same tests again.

Surgery. Had a 1mm positive margin a little over a year ago

Chief, sorry you had to deal with this at such a young age; are you still in the Navy? I was in the Navy some years ago( like 43 or so)

I've had a handful of the endorectal coil MRI's with contrast. Have not noticed a spike in PSA but now that prostate is gone I'll be watching. Just had labs, then the MRI yesterday so ill look for the PSA values next month. I usually have this test the same day as C-11 Choline PET so any variation may not be decisive on the cause...

I would see what the PSA value is again in 3 and 6 months before abandoning A.S. What does your Urologist think?  My A.S. Dr. at Memorial Sloan Kettering recommends the PSA taken every 6 months (not 3) because of this fluctuation.

I am still in. I am coming up on 23 years. :-) Yea it does suck. I keep thinking I am way too young for this crap
