RALP on Monday

I have decided to have RALP on Monday at Johns Hopkins with Dr. Han. I have read a lot of the posts about what to expect afterwards both in the short and long term and know that patience and a sense of humor are going to be needed. I did have one question about the surgery though. I was curious if there are any golfers out there and how long it was after the RALP before you could hit balls again. Any experiences anyone would like to share? I guess I was thinking more about the incisions and how much they affected you ability to swing and hit a golf ball. I am pretty sure I will wait until my catheter is out [img]/community/emoticons/smile.gif[/img] , but I would like to start golf again as soon as I can.

July 2013 - PSA 7.1

December 2013 - TURP for severe LUTS, discovered Gleason 6, 10% (2nd opinion on slides from JHMI), removed 50 grams of prostate tissue. Severe LUTS returned after about a month.

April 2014 - PSA 4.2

April 2014 - 12 core biopsy all negative (2nd opinion on slides from JHMI) bone scans negative, MRI showed no evidence of cancer outside the prostate. Remaining prostate size 63 grams.

Best to you!  I think the leaking may be more of a problem than the incision when swinging.  Take it easy, my doc told me nothing but walking for 4 weeks. 

On the lighter side, get your penis real hard and if possible put it to good use. You might not be able to use it soon; nor will it behave the way it did prior to this op.

I'd stick to miniature golf for the first couple of months. If you have youngsters in your family you might take one along to caddy for you. When the ball bounces off the windmill blades and winds up in the bushes, retrieving it can involve quite a bit of bending and twisting.

I had open RP at JH and played 18 holes after three weeks. You'll do fine!

Yeah it seems everyone is a little different as far as healing. My surgery was in Jan.this year and I still get some discomfort. I would ease into it for sure. I am 48 and Im sure I wouldnt have been able to drive a golf ball at 4 weeks. But like others have said some heal faster. Wishing you the best in your recovery.

Day 1 after RALP yesterday, so far, everything has gone as expected. Minor discomfort with incisions but on pain pump now so we will see as I wean off pain meds. Otherwise, I really feel good and no second guessing going on. Feel like a new person .

Hey feel like a new person. Would that new person be about 95 years old?
This ugly stage will pass. The catheter, adhesive tape, collection bags, ... heck even your missing penis will start to show up again. Just relax and enjoy the excuse to sit back and watch everyone else take care of the gardening chores - guilt free.

I'm glad to hear you're sugery went well.  Take it easy and you'll start to feel a little better every day...especially after that little rubber hose comes out.

I went golfing about 3 months after my surgery.  I played 3 rounds in 2 days and actually hit the ball better than usual.  I'm sure I could have gone a bit before this, but better safe than sorry.  You may feel well on the outside, but who knows how the healing in going the inside.

Glad to hear your surgery went well! Take it easy, expect some recovery curve balls here and there. Today is week 7 for me post surgery. Feel fine but still a drop of blood in my urine tonight and almost done with a UTI. This is what I mean with recovery curve balls. Each and every week improvement but a minor set back here and there. No biggy. Just wanted to let know that my recovery wasn't a straight line. Take care!

Just got path report from RALP, all contained in prostate, Gleason 6 no positive margins. Going to go for a nice 15 minute walk! Pretty day here in Lexington, SC.

Welcome to the other side Turp! Great path report, couldn't ask for a better one. No upgrade in Gleason, all contained, no positive margins. I had missed out on all three of those.

Now just walk. water, walk, water, etc until you get the catheter removed and then work on the side effects.

The cath removal feels strange when they deflate the ballon but it doesn't hurt. I just had one removed about 10 days ago after an AUS surgery.

That's a great report, TURP; how far is it from your house to the nearest miniature golf course? You'll be ready for that soon.
