your first post-prostatectomy erections: what were they like?

The fluid that some of you are speaking of is from the Cowpers gland. The fluid is basically what we used to call "pre-cum". You have no semen after surgery and most of the time orgasms will be dry. It is also very possible if you are talking about large amounts of fluid that there may be some urine mixed in with the pre-cum.

My husband. 53 y/o physically fit career military man had his nerve sparing radical prostatectomy on 4/28/14 (2 wks ago today) cath out on day 10, partial erection (1/3 of normal size and girth) day 11 (1/2) day 13 (75%) and as of last night nearly 100%.

He take 2.5mg Cialis since the day the cath was removed. We have yet to have actual penetration sex, but he is able to climax without any urine seepage on 3 of the 4 occasions by oral methods (sorry for the TMI).

We expected the worse case scenario but chose to be very proactive with his rehab no matter what results were. So we started the very day the cath was removed. We didn't expect to see results at all... but were surprised when we seen he was able to get about 1/3 of an erection.

He has very little incontinence. More like dribbles from time to time. Maybe uses one to two men guards a day with them not really being saturated at all. No stress incontinence (sneezing, coughing, upon standing or sitting) it seems he has an occasional issue when he is most relaxed or right before or after using the bathroom. And pretty much totally dry at night.

I think his level of physical fitness prior to and after surgery has aided in his "sooner than normal" recovery. Also, we do not eat processed foods or meats. As we are Vegan. (New Vegans in the past few months)

(If you have access to Netflix then watch two documentaries as to why we went Vegan... Forks over knives and also Food Inc.) We are truly meat lovers, but once we realized the damaging effects it caused both our bodies...we went cold turkey and quit it all together) ANYWAY BACK ON SUBJECT!!


Being that I am a nurse by profession, I did A LOT of research and digging of info prior to his surgery on what would help him. We started Kegels... yoga and pelvic floor exercises...WEEKS prior to surgery. Added more fruits and veggies and herbs that would help with blood flow prior to and after surgery. And of course, starting his rehab day one the cath was removed.

There is no real proof or 100% connection as to why some men have better success than others. But it seems that those who had less issues from the beginning with ED, those who were more active, and physically fit, those who had better diets, and nerve sparing procedures by an experienced surgeon, and positive thinking with a good penile rehab program from the beginning, and of course an active loving partner who was willing to do what ever necessary...had the best of luck.

I hear that there is a 3 month set back though. For men like my husband who **SEEMS** to have bounced back quickly... that at 3 months they usually slide back or regress for a while. We plan to anticipate that and do our best to prepare for it. The goal for us besides the obvious, is to insure he has 2-3 good erections weekly with or without penetration in order to prevent atrophy (penile shrinkage)

Worried Guy and Spottydog I was beginning to think I was the only one who had not experienced an erection.  It has been 15 months and neither Cialis nor the pump helped.  I can have an orgasm but the only erection I have had is also in my dreams.  It sure is a disappointment to wake up and realize it was only a dream.  I meet with the Uro this Friday for a follow up PSA since numbers have been climbing.  Uro took me off Cialis and has been pushing me to try the injection. He wanted to inject me back in February but I decided to hold off.   Depending on the results this Friday, I may take him up on his offer.  Guess there is nothing to lose.  Told him last time if it works, my wife and I may need to "borrow" his office for few minutes before we leave.  Of course if my PSA is continuing in the wrong direction, sex will be the last thing on my mind. 

I was very impatient with erections just like you. At fifteen months I was taking nightly Ciailis 5mg and I began noticing semi-erections in the morning. At two years now I am 100% with Levitra 20mg. I have not tried lower doses. Without meds I am 50%. You are likely to see big changes in the next nine months. Hang in there.

I was getting rock solid erections (without drugs) the day the catheter was removed and that was 7 years ago, and to this day they are still rock solid.  The only difference that I have is that I can't get an erection any more from mental stimulation like I could before my surgery.  Before my surgery, all I needed was to look at a naked lady o think about sex and I would get an erection, but now I can look at naked women 24/7 and feel nothing. For me to get an erection now, I need some sort manual stimulation.  Other then that, they are as rock solid as before my surgery. 

I also had surgery by Dr. Samadi. I have good continence, but do have ed problems. I use caverject or viagra. I prefer the viagra erection, but the side effects are not good, so I'm using caverject more often now. I'm concerned about this peyronnies problem though.

My first most surgery erection was annoying, because it happened while the catheter was still in and while I was in the middle of a bowel movment. It was also painful as it made the cath pull on the inside of my bladder.

That was more than six years ago.

Now I know that most of the PCa guys without problems are not searching the internet for solutions so most of the guys come to HW becasue they have problems, but while I've had my ups and downs over the last six years with erections being both simple and difficult to get, I hope it gives hope to those about the long journey you can have that I still get erections I still have sex. And soemtimes like yesterday I can have sex before I go to bed, then wake up in the night with a very pleasing erection, and not becasue I haev a full bladder but becasue I had a naughty dream, and then woke up in the morning with normal 'morning wood'. (= 3 in 9 hours!)

And last week I even had an erection that was about 10% bigger than I used to get before surgery and was actually painful, as though there was too much blood in my penis.

I'm not being smug, because the bad news is that my continence is not good, such that even with a pad on I ended up with a wet patch on my trousers while having a walk at th weekend, and I loads of urine drips and squirts when I'm trying to have sex, though not actually during climax!

Wow, another old thread 'rises' from the dead. Rubin, you're only a few weeks since surgery, be patient. If you've got enough to penetrate with, that's a good sign. Keep at it, it will get better.

I feel lucky that my URO took all my nerves. He says to not wait for nerves to repair. They won't. Scheduled an implant 4-17-18
