Got one scheduled for next week. Any suggestions for preparation. Am hearing a few disturbing things about
this procedure! Will I be able to travel afterwards?....have a very long road trip planned immediately after (Phoenix to New York)...

It's unpleasant, but not horrible. The coil is inserted, and then it inflates to stay in-place. The hardest part is staying perfectly still for so long while the scan is being performed.
You'll be relieved once it's over, but no residual effects.

No fun having that inserted. Its not flexible at all its a straight pipe up your rear. I bled and sitting in an office chair or car for an extended period that day or next would not be advised.
But maybe I have a sensitive but. I have never had a colonoscopy. The med asst called it a colonoscopy without the sedation.

I had one, it wasn't too bad. Not as bad a biopsy. May depend on the techs though. Had no problems afterwards.

I don't understand why you can't request to be knocked out, unless they need you to tell them it's uncomfortable.. And even then you should get knocked out..

Good luck, hope it goes well for you. Never had that done to me before, sounds most unpleasant, but 3 prostate biopsies were bad enough for me.

You need to be awake if they ask you it inhale, exhale or hold your breath. Also, if you have it with contrast, you need to be awake so you can focus on being still.
It's no ones favorite procedure. But you can still function after it is complete. My last one was much easier than the first 3. Knowing what to expect was the hardest part for me...
Good luck. You'll be fine!!

First off, I find the title of your post ironic - because there is nothing skinny about
the coil they insert! For me it was a horrible experience, much worse than my biopsy. My Colonoscopy was a walk in the park by comparison. Painful going in, painful comimg out, and very unpleasent during its stay up there. At least they let me take a Xanax before the procedure...see if your doc will allow that.
There was no residual pain after the procedure or at least it went away quickly. I did not have any problems sitting afterwards; in fact the next day I took a 3+ hour flight, followed by a 1 hour drive.
Good luck -- Tigerfan

Just had this done last week at MD Anderson. Not as bad as a biopsy for sure. Colonoscopy doesnt count because of sedation. The toughest part is the insertion, they did use lidocaine to numb the anal area. Once it is in you feel very full. The worst part for me was back pain from the table and of course the ER coil. Try to focus on something other than the experience and you will be fine. I went back to work immediately afterwards with no problem. A long sitting trip may not be real comfortable, but you most likely will be able to do it. I agree that it depends on the experience and skill of the tech and the nurse. They started an IV in order to inject contrast and then came back and said it wasnt part of the protocol so the stick wasnt necessary. I would ask before they start it to make sure. I dont have the results yet.

I have had is done twice now. Someone told me at work that being raped is easier the second time. I think he was right. The second time I wasn't a virgin anymore so if wasn't that bad LOL! First time the sailor mouth I have came out when the nurse showed it to me and said it wasn't a big deal. I asked her if she had every been raped by a horse in the A$*, my wife was horrified and the nurse answered, no. I then said, well you then have no idea if its no big deal!
All in good fun, just try and relax, which was nearly impossible for me the first time.

As others have said, definitely not fun! Going in was bad, once in not so bad. I would definitely call in advance and see if you can get a Xanax or Valium prescript
ion before it. I had Valium before my biopsy which definitely helped.
Not pleasant, but provides useful information, so nothing to do but deal with it!

I think Valium or Xanax would be a great idea

If you get drugs, you'll have to have someone (identified as trusted) to drive afterwards, and taxis are not allowed.
I worked out a deal with the guy who used to run taxi to the airport for me in my 300 days a year on the road period. He would come by, drop the cab, drive with me, and sign in as my cousin.

Also, get a foam doughnut cushion (like we use for 'rhoids) - should help if the pressure gets to be too much.

Thank you again Guys. Some prettly blunt stuff! I like it blunt...not the coil, the skinny. Actually the thing that bummed me out the most so far was my original urologist telling me that the biopsy was a "simple procedure done in my office." Looking back, he obviously meant "simple" for HIM!

Oh the MRI coil is a lot easier than the biopsy I think. Its just tough to relax and just allow yourself to be sodomized

I had one - it wasnt bad. Discomfort when coil device inserted, but did not feel it after that. Took about
an hour.

It was thoroughly unpleasant, but not worth getting overly worked up over. I wished I had been offered something to relax me only in that I think it would have made the time go by further. You'll get through it, but you might want to ask for some mild chemical assistance...

My husband just had one as part of an MRI to determine why his PSA spiked. He hates all medical procedures, needles make him pass out, he has had three saturation biopsies under anesthesia and two colonoscopies. I think the anticipation was worse for him than the procedure itself. They gave him Ativan beforehand to calm him down. Afterward he said it wasn't that bad.
