Hey TingThing,
I had a pulmonary embolism (PE) in February of 2004 .... similar to your Dad's. After extensive testing and scans of my body, which focused on my legs, the docs came to the conclusion that they did not know what caused my PE and put me on blood thinners (warfarin) which I took for the next five years (first 6 months at their request ... the next 4.5 years at my request). I am not sure why your dad's doctors are so sure it was the operation that caused the PE but you may want to be cautious when it is time to take him off of the blood thinners, in that there could be another cause for the clots (where his legs scanned for clots?).
I went off the blood thinners in 2009 when I scheduled my DaVinci for PCa. I have not been on them since ... but I have made significant changes to my weight, diet, and exercise routine.
All the best to your Dad and to you. By the way, your write up sounds like you are very familiar with medicine, any chance you are a practitioner?
Nah, I am just an average joe, no medical school even. Just read up a lot on my spare time as I do like to learn about
the intricacies of medicine and certain diseases, such as prostate cancer.
They determined his clots were due to the surgery because he had no other risk factors for it, none of the blood disorders associated with an increased risk of blood clots. DVT and pulmonary emboli are risks of any surgery, particularly those of greater than an hour to an hour and a half. And it just so happened that risk unfortunately came to fruition in his case. By the time I got to him in the driveway, I thought he was dead. Pale as a ghost and just lying there in a lifeless face down heap.
