blood bypassing catheter

Had my surgery on October 28 2014. The first four days my urine was clear. On Sunday blood started to show up in my urine. This morning after i went to the bathroom blood was on the toilet after i had a bowel movement. It seems to have bypassed the catheter. Is this a normal part of healing

Yes and No.... Depends on how much blood we're talking about.

Yes, surgery guys will pass blood clots for a period of time...

Are we talking a little Pink or out and out blood?

The blood wasnt much but i felt alot of pressure when i had my movement.

After my RP my urine was fine then my bag started to become dark then no doubt red went to ER at my local hospital was discovered I had a infection.

I did go see my doctor last night and he prescribe a 10 day supply of cipro. I was just surprised when i stood up and seen blood on the toilet seat

Two things my doctor says, "a drop or two of blood on the toilet can look like a lot so possibly it's nothing to worry about" and "still if it worries you, call and we'll check it out."

Call to the doctor might be in order but likely the extra pressure did something. Likely your safe to wait and see if it happens again. a little bright red blood isn't usually a problem, lots of dark red is something to get checked out fast.

Called my urologist and he sad that the blood is to be expected. He said to expect it for 6 weeks

I had a similar experience.It is scary because you see thick blood next to the catheter tube.

Reason: I pushed and strained a bit.

Solution (in my case): I became aware of my sequence; that is, I ALWAYS pee first then have a bowel movement. Its subtle and many are not aware of their sequence. The catheter distorts the signals, so I'd sit and wait for the right signals.

Blood outside the cath is normal if you strain during BM which is why stool softeners are a must. I was horrified when blood shot out and hit the wall! After that I held toilet paper around my penis to absorb the blood, and stopped straining. Just part of the recovery and healing process. Don't remove cath until there's been no blood in the cath bag for two days. That's a sign of complete healing of bladder/ urethra reconnection.
Luckily all of this is over in les than two weeks.
