OT: Meralgia Paresthetica

I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

I have for many years on my right leg... Usually the dentist chair is a place where my right thigh would go numb.

Recently, my left thigh is getting the burning pain while sitting in my recliner. From what I've read,it usually only happens to one leg?!?!?

QUESTION: What type of doc would I go to, to have this checked out... My GP is a referral maniac and I'm thinking I might as well bypass him if possible.

Also from what I've read, losing some weight will probably be very helpful... I've added almost ten pounds to my already too much weight... I'm 5'11" and am up to 220lbs.

Steve, on top of being diagnosed with MP, I also have IT band syndrome in my left leg. My internal practitioner diagnosed it after doing a basic neurological exam (standing on my toes followed by on my heels, etc.). She sent me for some physical therapy which helped quite a bit and I now do a short series of floor exercises at home to help stretch the hip and back muscles to ease the compression. As far as what type of doctor to see, I would probably start with a neurologist if for no other reason than to rule out more serious causes (hernaitated disks, etc.).

FYI: The tingling I can handle but the burning/stabbing pain in the thigh I can live without. I find one exercise I do to realign the spin helps quite a bit when wouldn't recommend anything until you've ruled out an skeletal issues.

I haven't been exercising as much in the past several weeks due to the colder weather...but will change that since there are many things I can do indoors.
