For the first months after surgery, I did not "leak". Everything simply flowed through without restriction. Kegels, exercise, physical therapy, did them all. When it came to start scheduling adjuvant RT, we doubled down on the problem. I was at 1-2 pads a day 5 months out. ART slugged me back to 3 a day. That got a little better, but has been a steady issue for 5 years now. My uro / surgeon is at odds with my insurance co. Insurance says it is not bad enough to justify additional surgery, so would not pay.
Lately I've had a lot of bleeding & leakage as some RT burns in the bladder neck are causing lots of problems, after I had a stricture removed.
There are also some RT burns in my rectum that have caused continuing problems, as I had previous colo-rectal surgery for other issues. That scar tissue was damaged, and refuses to heal again.
I remain with a very weakened immune system, as the RT caused a significant fall in my white blood cell count, which has never come close to recovering.
Did it impact my job? Absolutely. I used to travel overseas constantly, spending weeks / months in foreign countries working on site, teaching courses, doing seminars. The issues I have make a schedule just another piece of paper to wipe with. Some complaints from customers that my sessions were broken unpredictably caused me to be pulled off the road, and put on a help desk.
I have to be careful just going to the grocery store, lest someone with a cold sneeze on me.
As to "Depends", it is a brand of a number of incontinence products. You might want to go to their website and request the free sample pack they will send. Tena also has a similar sample program for men.
You group into what I call pants (underwear) and pads (various sizes from "guards" for men to some women's pads that can also serve in a pinch).
Pants come in various sizes and absorbency levels, but one key variable is the "adjustable" factor. Some have velcro-like tabs on the sides to make them easier to change. They are very useful while you have the catheter (if like me, you leak around it, and sop everthing). They are not so great after catheter, as they are bulkier.
Pads (Guards) fit inside undergarments as PeterDA described. I used the "double protection" model for months.
The pads vary greatly in absorbency. I was down to one Tena guard (close to the lightest) a day until the stricture hit. Now I'm back on the Walgreens mega "guard" pads.
BTW - you are infringing heavily on my 2% territory. I'm the 2% guy when 98% do fine. There isn't room on this hill to share!
