Victoria, my husband is a newbie and we are still in the process of gathering data, as in a high tech biopsy on Friday.
If it were me, I'd prefer the surgical option. However, I have not reviewed the medical research.
In our teaching hospital, you sit before a committee of different specialists to recommend a treatment plan. Surgeons like to "cut" and radiation oncologists like to "zap". This committee protects the patients, or should.
I wish you both the best.

Jane...wondering why the preference for surgery considering that your husband has likely extra-capsular extension. That significantly increases the chances that your husband would need follow-up radiation after surgery, meaning he'd have the SEs of both surgery and radiation.
Completely agree with your line that surgeons like to cut and ROs like to zap.
Good luck to you and your husband!

All the surgeons have their acronyms. Your doc calls it SPECIAL, SAMADI calls it his SMART technique. And dr ash Tewari mentioned above, whose office I'm sitting in as I write this, calls it his ART technique
I had one surgeon actually say to me in the course of our conversation ?not one of the above mentioned. "Look at the end of the day we are all salesmen"
This is why it's so importNt to get opinions and form your own decision

Sorry to pile on, but yeah, the fact that your surgeon is even talking about
surgery after radiation seems really odd. From all the research I've done, it is -very- rare that this would ever be done. If you get radiation up front, you pretty much fry the prostate, so there shouldn't be much need to try to remove it afterwards.
Now, radiation has its own side effects, but so does surgery, as everyone has mentioned. It sounds like the surgeon is setting your husband up for the good possibility of having to deal with both (if it has broken out of the capsule).
Regardless, good luck, let us know how your second opinion goes.

Had second and pre op done on Friday. Both doctors feel it is contained in the prostate and he will probably loose one nerve bundle set. So surgery is on for Jan the 8th.

Victoria,
Hope he does well with the surgery. He should do fine.
Don't forget to make sure he can see the television from his recliner before he goes in. His surgeon and the various nurses will instruct you and him on most of what you need to know for his recovery but, somehow, they often forget the recliner and accessibility to the television remote.

Husband has prostectomy surgery Jan. 8th. Surgeon said everything outside of prostate looked like normal tissue. He also took some lymph nodes that he said also looked normal. He has done excellent. Sleeps in bed, walks a lot and really doesn't seem to have to many problems with cath. It will be removed Friday. So now we just await pathology report.

Great pathology report! Rusty's prostate cancer had went through the capsule, but Dr. miller got clear margins and lymph nodes. He also said as aggressive as the cancer was that had Rusty waited that it would have not been a good outcome. Now the healing of the body, mind and soul begins.
We praise our God.

I'm happy for you and your husband. I had the same surgery 12/20/2013, so it's been a little over a year.
My PSA has been between 0.02 & 0.01, I haven't had any treatments or meds. My continence has been good. they only time I leak is when a blow my nose hard. Our sex life is fairly normal with the help of Cialis and a pump.
I hope your husband continues to do well.
