Did you have a family history of prostate cancer?

me too. No male in my family before my generation had PC, but all three of us brothers got it.

No, no history. In fact, other than my first cousin (mother's side) Marsha, about my age, who was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago, no record of any kind of cancer for several generations back. Heart trouble is usually what has got us.

In my case, I was a soldier in Vietnam in 1969 and have reason to believe I was exposed to Agent Orange being used in the area where I was. That is a possible explanation for my getting PCa

My father had prostate cancer, and he was part of a family pattern study. His memories indicated that every male in his line going back for at least 2 generations had prostate issues with similar symptoms.

Mother had colon cancer.

Both my parents died of cancer: Mom, colon; Dad, pancreatic. Dad was 73 when he died and although I never discussed things like PSA with him, the odds would have been decent that he would have had a positive biopsy due to his age.

As to my generation, my older brother (2 years older than me) had prostate cancer and all I know about his diagnosis of about five years ago is that "very few cells and they caught it early." (I wish I knew his specifics, but he either doesn't know or he doesn't want to discuss it with me...)

I do know that the odds of my remaining two brothers having PC are substantially higher as a result of the two brothers with it.

No family history.

My dad was diagnosed at age 70; Grandfather at 75. Mine was diagnosed this year at 57.

Uncle had PCa and died of it after radiation failed.

Father had lung cancer (heavy smoker for decades) and died of it.

Jack, interesting, but it still boils down to luck of the draw, in my opinion. I really don't care where it came from, sure science would, they have their work cut out.

Jack, interesting, but it still boils down to luck of the draw , in my opinion.   Doug, that’s fine, you and each of us are entitled to an opinion…but it seems appropriate here to point out that the opinion quoted above is not shared by the medical researchers who may have looked at this a bit closer.   I think that your nihilism—the notion that it’s pure chance—and that things within your own control just don’t matter is dangerous/foolish, especially as we seek to lead & teach the next generation (for those, I suppose, who do wish to lead & teach the next generation).   Do you have a son?   Or a grandson?   Researchers in this field would tell you that getting cancer, or avoiding cancer, is a RISK-MANAGEMENT challenge.   Lifestyle studies are very difficult to run because the ability to control all the relevant variables is next to impossible. But there is abundant authoritative, validated evidence that the immune system is profoundly influenced by lifestyle choices.   Mismanaged toxic stress fills the body with adrenaline and cortisone derivatives, both known to inhibit immune function, known to stimulate an environment for cancer development and growth.   The evidence now shows that many small tumors of cancer cells are perfectly well contained by our body’s natural defenses, and often even disappear on their own. Cancer, we now know, is not a one-way street. Small tumors may appear, grow a bit, and then go away. What this means is that lifestyle choices that weaken or strengthen the natural defenses that protect us against cancer may play a major role in whether early tumors develop—or not—into a dangerous disease or even a diagnosable disease at all.   Hey, I’m not saying that everyone can cure cancer by lifestyle modifications, but the good science says we can modify one’s cancer risk by doing so…implying otherwise is reckless if we, collectively, want to help slow the continued growth of PC in the generations that follow.     Getting cancer, or avoiding cancer, is a risk-management challenge... not purely luck of the draw .
