I have mixed feelings about
the Superbowl . . .even though I live in Seattle and think the Seahawks are one of the most exciting sports teams playing today (the game against Green bay was amazing!), I wouldn't want a son or grandson of mine to play football, especially not in the NFL.
Most player have very short careers--3.3 years according to the NFL players association (
www.livestrong.com/article/15527-long-average-career-nfl-player/). Often careers are ended by blown knees and other injuries. Studies of the brains of former NFL players that have had autopsies, show that the great majority have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can lead to early dementia. The NFL spent years trying to discredit this medical research--there was a great documentary on this on Frontline (League of Denial
www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/league-of-denial/). The NFL is much quicker to penalize players for behavior that is thought to interfere with the commercial interests of the league, than to investigate or penalize players that have beat up their wives or families, or even committed murder.
NFL players are gladiators, sacrificing their health for a short moment of glory, for entertainment of the masses and the profits of a multibillion dollar industry. Richard Sherman, the Seahawk who some perceive as arrogant, actually is an intelligent man, an eloquent critic of the league (
