Hi Julieann,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! Cancer diagnoses can rock your world, and your world already sounds pretty stressful. But prostate cancer is more forgiving than most, so try not to let your worry get into overdrive yet. Here's my initial thoughts:
First, read the sticky at the top of this page for newly diagnosed. Lots of helpful stuff in there, some of which I will probably repeat.
Next, you want to learn more about your Dad's results. Apparently, at least one of his biopsy cores (they probably took 12 of them) was a Gleason 8 (that's considered on the aggressive side). But there should be additional info about how many cores were positive, the percentage and if some had a different Gleason score. That's helpful to get his overall diagnosis.
Let us know what his PSA was prior to his biopsy, that's another important piece of info. When you have that, make a "signature" that will be included in your future postings.
Also, let us know where you live as we may be able to make recommendations on who you can consult with.
Just based on your dad's age, his most likely treatment would be radiation. If that's the case, you'll want to speak with an experience radiation oncologist. But if you can give us more info, we should be able to give you better advice.
There's tons of hope at this stage, even if his diagnosis is more on the higher risk side (I was a Gleason 9 and I'm doing well), so do keep that in mind. Good luck and please share additional info as you get it.
