pT3b - 8 years - And the Oncologist mentions the C word after tests

C = Cured

On February 14 2007 Ruth and I headed to SoCal for an uncertain future. I had an advanced prostate cancer and it was time for action. Feb 16 surgery. And even through I was stage T3b, and had radiation in the coming months, and three years of years of chemical hormonal ablation, we moved ahead with hope. Folks as of today I am cancer free for 8 years. All tests this week came back perfect. My oncologist told me I do not need to reschedule any appointments if I wanted just add a PSA here and there. But because he is my friend and we work together in cancer research I told him "oh no you don't...I am keeping my 45 minute annual sessions so that I can corner you down and drag you along the way you have dragged me along". We had a great meeting discussing research and other issues in cancer. And he will be a presenter again soon for my groups.

Now where did I place my corkscrew?

Tony - Your posts seem to come at the perfect time. Hubby's six month post-ART PSA is next week, and although the three month test came back at .03 (same as before ART) and the rad onc feels it will continue to go down, it is still extremely stressful waiting and wondering. Then I read your success as a PT3B and I know there is life beyond PSA's and I stop trying to control what I can't and live in the moment with hope for the future.

SVI bilaterally (direct, not distal), LVI, pos margin at apex (3+3), EXE at base
4+3 w/ tertiary 5 (65% 4, 35% 3, 5% 5), tumor involved 15% of gland
12/2013 PSA 0.02; 2/2014 PSA 0.03; 3/14 PSA 0.02; 4/2014 PSA 0.02; 6/2014 PSA .03
MRI/bone scan negative
7/01/14 to 8/27/14 - 40 sessions adjuvant radiation
11/21/2014 first PSA post-ART .03

I've already told you once but will express it here also. It is so wonderful to read this and gives me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. That all the tears, pain, and expense will be worth it to be here 8 years later saying cancer free. It's stories like yours that keep me from going insane w/ worry and dwelling on what PC has stolen from us. ~Miki~

Amazing that an oncologist used the C word! I thought they signed a pact to never say it. How much more gratifying then that he did. Congratulations!

To add even more hope I want to add that my oncologist is well known and considered the leading research oncologist for prostate cancer ~ Dr. Nicholas Vogelzang. He is close to Ian Thompson, Peter Carroll, Maha Hussain, Peter Scardino, Mark Scholz, Steven Strum etc etc. and has been a leading investigator that brought us (Taxotere) docetaxel, radium 221, cabazataxel (Jevtana), Xtandi (Enzalutamide), Zytiga (Abiraterone Acetate)! Even the CHAARTED trial that brings a lot of hope to men with extensive prostate cancer was his design with Chris Sweeney. e was also instrumental in the release of Provenge.

C=Cured

I guess I am biased here. I'll kick his skinny butt if my disease returns. Until then I stand with him in research. I am very lucky to be a part of this.

Folks I don't post at HW as much as I used to, but I have not lowered my participation in research Patient Advocacy. The funny thing is that I am still learning every day.

Tony, that is marvelous news! So happy for you - it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Thanks for all of your research, support, and doggedness when it comes to PC and the folks it impacts. Keep up your fantastic work! (I was there when you got your stitches out!)
