"If Kennedy Lived: An Alternate History" by Jeff Greenfield. (If the author's name is familiar, he's been a reporter and political commentator on various talk shows and newscasts in the past).
Book is in the "alternative history" genre (also called "counterfactual history): how (the author thinks) the past 50 years or so would have gone had Kennedy escaped assassination.
Highlights: JFK would have narrowly defeated Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential election. Author doesn't think JFK would have been into large-scale social improvement programs, as Johnson was, hence no Medicare passage at the time, or maybe ever. JFK would have done a "stealth withdrawal" from Vietnam, hence no major military effort would have happened there. But the price for this would have been support from Southern congressmen, who in return would have called for, and JFK would have given in on, defeat of all civil rights legislation. Such legislation would have been delayed for years or even decades. LBJ would have been involved in a political ethics scandal and forced to resign from office. JFK's health, which was never good even when he took office, would have continued to deteriorate to the point that he would have become wheelchair bound, much like FDR, but his failing health would have deterred his sexual indiscretions. On a lighter note, JFK would have invited the Beatles to the White House, and humorously remarked "Not since the British invasion of Washington in 1812 has a British force taken this country by such storm!"
All pure speculation, of course, but it's fun to imagine along with the author just what might have happened if just one thing, like that day in Dallas in 1963, had turned out very differently.
