I am a pharmacist and for many years was skeptical about melatonin being any good at all.
I was also traveling overseas 3-4 times per year which kept my sleep pattern messed up often.
I needed help fairly often falling asleep and took Ambien for it for many years.
My doc wanted to switch to trazodone 3 years ago, I didn't want to.
I tried melatonin 6mg about 1 hour prior to bedtime each night.
After a few days, I noticed I was sleepy at bedtime every night which was very abnormal for me.
Now, my pattern is that I take it every night for about 3 weeks and don't need to take it anymore for 4 to 6 months. When I notice I'm not falling asleep again, I restart it for a few more weeks.
It works for me without any side effects.
Interesting, as an frequent insomniac most of my adult life, I have taken 1 mg of melatonin most nights for many a year now, with MUCH less trouble with insomnia. (hopefully no SEs LOL! None apparent so far) But maybe I should adopt your on and off pattern. But, I do take a much smaller dose than you.
