Two years ago, after surgery and salvage radiation both failed,
I talked to my doctors about diet and exercise. "There are no
randomized controlled studies that indicate ...." and, "we'll wait
till your PSA reaches 5 and start you on hormone therapy".
I'm thinking "guess Pete's roadside fruit and vegetable stand
couldn't come up with $200 million, and besides, I wouldn't
want to risk the possible side effects of a healthier heart and
lower risk for Alzheimer's disease."
So, since I have a marker to measure progress, in the "Ultra-
sensitive PSA test at Labcorp, that now is reported to three
(significant?) figures, why not eat, exercise and measure?
And so I did. Having a Gleason Score of 6, PSA of 0.067,
and a PSADT of 7 months, I experimented with my diet,
walked briskly for 30 min/day, everyday and measured
my PSA every 3 months.
So, after a couple of weeks putting together "The Diet",
then sticking to it for 3 months, measuring PSA, making
small changes in the Diet, and repeating for two years, I
observed a few things.
First, diet and exercise does matter. My PSADT started at
7 months and the last one was 44 months. Second,
you have to stick to it. Along the way, I removed soy
entirely and PSADT was 8.5 months, put it back in everyday
and went to 25 mo. Sugar in, PSADT was 7 months; sugar out,
PSADT over 40 months.
By sugar in, I mean maybe 20-25 gms/day...not very high.
By sugar out, 5-10 gms/day...very, very small. The worst
thing you can do is have an insulin spike in the morning.
Starting the day with a glass of OJ and a coffee with two
or three sugars, and its over. Probably, the only thing worst
is taking a supplement for joint pain containing chondroitin
sulfate.
All the above has been my own experience and may not be
yours, you know, genotype et al.
"The Diet"
First, stop feeding the cancer;
#1 If you’re taking a supplement for osteoarthritis containing chondroitin sulfate, stop taking it immediately. (articles by Dr Charles Myers; C. Ricciardelli)
#2 Limit your intake of simple sugars, including table, raw and brown sugars; honey, syrup, and molasses… especially on an empty stomach. (PC + serum insulin level)
#3 Avoid bread, bakery goods, pasta, potatoes and rice. “Brown” over “white” for bread, pasta, and rice if you must, but only one or two portions per week. (PC + insulin)
#4 Avoid red meat, organ meats, charbroiled meats, dairy products, and egg yolks. (PC + arachidonic acid, saturated fat, dairy)
#5 Limit your intake of omega-6 fatty acids including the oils from corn, sunflower, safflower, canola, soy, flaxseed, peanut and walnut. Olive oil is OK. (PC + linoleic acid).
Second, start fighting it. This is what I do daily:
#6 Eat a variety raw vegetables, especially broccoli and broccoli sprouts. I have raw vegetables with hummus (made with olive oil), mixed with turmeric, black pepper and rosemary. I eat only low sugar fruit, berries and tart apples.
#7 Eat some stewed or cooked tomatoes, soup such as vegetable or lentil.
#8 Eat fish/shell fish several times a week. But do not eat “farmed” fish (nor take excessive amounts of omega-3 supplements). These may contain high amounts of arachidonic acid.
#9 Drink green tea every day. Lemon juice prevents rapid oxidation of the tea. Pomegranate juice is also good, but not too much due to high sugar content.
#10 Get some sunshine (Vit D-3) and exercise, I walk briskly for 30 minutes, 7 times/week… but 4 times/week is likely ok.
