I wrote this piece today while at the SWOG Spring session in SFO. First off this is the best weather I have seen in SFO regardless of time of year.
Let me set the stage for the newcomers.
David Emerson was a dear friend that was just under two year my junior. When I was diagnosed at age 44, David was already diagnosed at 42. My PSA was about
20. His about
280. I had local mets and he was fully metastatic and very much facing an elephant in the room reality. At this time in 2006, the TAX327 trial was barely 3 years old and showed that there was a brief survival improvement for patients like him. There was no Zytiga, there was no Xtandi, Zofigo, JEVTANA, Provenge. There was barely any active surveillance for a guy with far lesser prostate cancer.
After 7 years David and I parted ways. After discussions about
how to improve patient awareness and participation in advocacy, and a very nice dinner tonight....
