Recovery time after biopsy

I had my biopsy at 10:30 in the morning and was back to work by noon, and I do not work behind a desk,  however I was not put out for the biopsy

Gotta have a sense of humor about this stuff.

I had it numbed with a shot and 12 'samples' taken. Made small talk with the Uro. It was the day of game 5 of the world series, late in the afternoon. He said he wanted to get home to watch "his Phillies". I say, 'now that's a problem, I'm a Yankee fan". Without missing a beat he turns to his assistant and says "let's use that longer needle"! Only time in my life I begged off being a Yankee fan!

Mild irritation. No blood in urine. Lot's in semen (when I finally got the nerve) which has just now cleared up.

My wasn't as difficult as my mind was telling me, at least at first. By the time the ninth sample was taken it was getting pretty darn old. By twelve I had made it just fine as was not as difficult as I believed. Driving home was hard on the butt but made do. More pain was envolved in inserting the gold markers for Radiation. Again the long stinging clip or pinch feeling. They had a grab bar in the room for this. I was never offered anything but over the counter meds. My PSA was low and the cancer was discovered during an office exam.

I realize this is an old thread but I wanted to share my experience. I just underwent trans-rectal ultrasound biopsy. The procedure itself is rather benign as I was sedated so didn't really feel anything. I had some blood in my urine for two days after the procedure and then it completely cleared up. The problem started two days after when I developed a huge (and incredibly painful hemorrhoid) right at the entrance to the cave. I required medical intervention to get rid of it and so my recovery time was substantially longer than normal.

For anyone facing this test I would say to read all you can prior to getting it, especially the probability of sepsis and other infections. Post procedural infection is becoming a very real and dangerous side effect for this test so just don't go into it lightly. Discuss it thoroughly with your doctor and ask a lot of questions.

My hemorrohoid hadn't bothered me in 10 years but it's been almost unbearable in the 9 days since the biopsy. The doc yesterday gave me some "Proctofoam" that has really helped and got me back to normal.

That over the counter preparation H is almost useless.

I got my 12 core biopsy about 7 weeks ago, came back negative. You guys that got it done with no anesthesia that say it was nothing I don't get. Are you by any chance used to having things shoved up your arse? I would never get it done again without light sedation. I was wide awake, took a valium before i left the house, should have drank a quart of wild turkey. My butthole still hurts from the roll of quarters sized metal guide they shove up there that was sharp on the edges, testicles still ache, taint pain, semen is thin and watery lots of volume. Uro Doc said it was urine in my semen but didn't say how long it will last or why it's like that. Had bloody urine for a couple weeks, semen was shockingly brown and bloody abut not watery yet. That tooke a few weeks to develop. I can knock a picture off the wall now, never could before the biopsy. No blood in stools ever.

Drs lie. They said a cystoscopy was like a catheter. That was a lie but, I wouldn't want to be totally out for it. I have heard they rush and more accidents happen under any sedation. They can do some serious damage with a cystoscopy. Personally I think it takes a different breed of cat to be a urologist. They can mess you up for life and there is no way to prove they did it.

I had mine under general anaesthesia and felt pretty groggy after that. Crapped crap and blood after that, pissed blood for a few days.

And, so it was!

Age 65 -- Vietnam War vet (agent orange exposure). PSA was 2013/4.14, 2014/4.41, 2015/5.89. Had prostate biopsy this week. Friend told me that it was painful -- holy cow -- a non-event. Not comfortable but very little pain (about 1/4 of a bee sting). Friend wasn't in the military so guess he doesn't know what pain is. Reason for writing -- a lot of blood in urine -- seem to be getting worse 4 days into recovery. As others have said semen is really bloody. I drink a lot of fluids -- blood in urine much worse if anything other than water. Iced tea especially bad. Wondering if anyone else having similar problem.

I had mine done on a Tuesday afternoon and ended up staying home on Wednesday. I did not like the biopsy and would only do the one. I did have some blood in the urine for a few days. I was an elementary principal and ended up doing office work when I did go back to work on Thursday. By Friday I was feeling fine. Best of luck to you.

I see some folks have responded to this old thread. I guess I never did respond.

I had it under sedation and it went fine. I went back to work the next day or the day after (can't remember)

Waiting for results is harder and more unpleasant than the biopsy itself.

Beeman, let us know the results.

I just re read your post, starting with "reason for writing"

The blood in urine could last a week, or two. It is deceiving, a small amount of blood could greatly discolor the urine. If heavy bleeding continues, and/or gets worse though, def call your doc. After my first biopsy blood in urine stopped after 3 days or so. Second time it lasted over a week, I called doc, nurse said it could be a couple of weeks.


The bloody semen could last six to eight weeks, and will slowly go from dark red to brown, to light brown before it disappears.

Thanks so much for your concern -- still no results -- but my Doctor just called and wants me to enroll in some research study at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore (we live in Annapolis). All expenses paid. Not sure what this means. Standing by for the rest of the info.

Call me crazy, but I got up off the table, wiped as much KY as I could off my bum, and went back to work. I thought no maybe the work just took my mind off of the biopsy, and any pain or discomfort I might have had.

I don't think Zufus has been on for quite awhile. The last he posted was about his paralysis from spinal mets. Has anyone heard from him?

Got results -- Doc seems to think this mighty have something to do with Vietnam War agent orange contamination. NOT bad -- all things considered.
12 cores

10 were benign prostatic tissue

right mid/left mid adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 3 + 3)
involving 10% of the specimen (1 of 3 cores contain cancer).
cancer length 0.29 cm

left lat mid adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 3 + 4)
involving 10% of the specimen (1 of 2 cores contain cancer).
cancer length 0.17 cm

Hey -- this is entry into a great club -- I feel honored.

The doc is putting me into a genetic test group -- supposed to get results back in 2-3 weeks. Then we go from there. My wife is more worried about this than I am -- she is a real trooper but this is scaring her.

Thanks for taking the time to right all of your info down. Looks like we have similar pathology.

We WILL beat this ******.

just had my first needle biopsy yesterday. (i'm 63 and reasonably fit)
was naturally a bit anxious...but MD had prescribed valium which seemed to help.
not really painful, just uncomfortable having instruments in a place one is not used to
MD was very thoughtful and kept asking how i was doing.
all in all, not as bad as i'd imagined
a word to all, from someone who very much wanted to avoid this procedure
don't let fear stop you
a root canal is much worse
follow your doctor's instructions and hope that the lab results come back with good news.
