PENILE IMPLANTS

Has anyone had success with a penile implant who cares to share with us their experience
with type EX: subcutaneous, semi-rigid or malleable or any other types.
My husband has had a RP and it has been 3 years.

The implant is a device that works and has a high rate of satisfaction but a lot depends on the person doing the implant, it is very important to have the size installed. I have the three piece which consists of reservoir, pump and inflatable tubes for the penis. Mine is an AMS700 LGX. The "LGX" means it expands both length and girth when inflated. The older devices just expanded in girth and stayed the same length after inflation, the 700LGX expands length as well as girth and this CAN make a better fit although the growth in length is not required for a good result if the device is sized right. Most people these days select the three piece inflatable if they are a candidate. The inflatable requires considerable hand strength to pump it up all the way and there are some other issues that might indicate the "malleable" or also called semi rigid, I never heard of the subcutaneous? The result, I think, would be much better with the three piece if he is a candidate. If he gets one he will almost surely be able to have a very firm erection that will last as long as he decides. If he has lost sensation the implant will not help but that still he will have and erection and be able to perform. If he gets this done, he will no longer be able to ever have a natural erection again but after three years it might be time to get on to something else. I assume you have tried things like VED or injections? If not maybe you should before going to the last resort of the implant. I had mine done at the Texas Medical Center with Dr. Larry Lipschultz surgeon from Baylor Scott Urology Dept., he is very good at this. Anyway I am very satisfied with how mine works and I think it's great to have this option available.

As a patient for Pca your insurance very well might cover it. Medicare covered it an with my supplemental policy, all the cost were covered. There is an adjustment period, sort of, more like a break-in procedure. I was recommended to inflate to the max daily and leave it for an hour. At first most are only able to do, maybe 10 minutes or so. The daily inflation will increase that time fairly quickly, also it helps a lot toward recovery of former length. The procedure has a list price (whatever that means) of a little over $100K but in reality is a lot less, depending on insurance and the hospitals it maybe around 30K? buy maybe Peter can comment better on the cost as I don't think he is on Medicare. If you decide to pursue this try to vet you doctor, apparently almost any uro can perform this op but selecting the length and adding the spacers in the base is something that takes experience. Also, in some of the hospitals where this is routinely done, the AMS or Coloplast rep. assists in the op and brings in an assortment of options that can be employed during the procedure. about the Colopast, the is the other major player in the implant field. Their implant is called the Titan and it seems to fit better than the AMS product in guys who have larger members. They don't offer the feature of length expansion but I don't think that is key in making the selection. The AMS is particularly limited in it girth so if he was of larger the girth, then the coloplast might the recommended by the doctor, also the Coloplast has the reputation of be tougher and more durable. All this might be too much information for now and this is the type of discussion the would be best had on the implant forum at FrankTalk site. During a pre-op visit with a PA, I was shown both models and asked to decide, my surgeon did not make any recommendations. Looks like your husband has had a rough go of it so far, maybe the implant would be something that could add some quality of life right now.

As BillyBob said, I just got one but mine is too new for me to have gotten used to it yet. I have a three-piece inflatable AMS 700 CX implant. I also have an AMS 800 Artificial Urinary Sphincter which was implanted at the same time.

I haven't done much yet with the penile implant because the break-in process for the AUS is taking most of my attention. The better urinary continence I can manage before I introduce my wife to my new bionics the more-favorable reaction I can expect. I do pump it up ever day for a few minutes and it seems to work OK. It seems a bit smaller than I expected. Although my surgeon and I never discussed the exact model I had sort of expected an LGX (which can stretch in length) but I woke up with a CX which doesn't. Oh well, I'll make do.

What I can tell you is that the implant does make one's willy a bit lumpy. The cylinders have hard rubber cones at the end that one can feel..

I was implanted with the Coloplast Titan IPP (Inflatable Penile Prosthesis) in December 2007 after developing
ED Post-Prostatectomy in February 2004.
My Implant restored both my sex life and the emotional bond with my wife.
I have full penile sensitivity and the Titan does not interfere with any of my daily physical activities, e.g.,
weight lifting, swimming, hiking, etc.
In summary, my wife and I both love my Implant and I would do it again in a heart-beat!!

Bob, did you have "full penile sensitivity" prior to the IPP? Or did that improve over time. I still consider the implant but my few successes in the last 14 months have not felt worth a d*mn. Sometime even unpleasant, especially with a pump/ring.(though plenty hard) I have wondered if pleasure would increase any with more frequency, or practice so to speak. And obviously it would be easier to get some practice with an IPP.

Wow, thx for the reply, Bob. I'm not sure how an experience like yours, as you describe it, could be any better. Very encouraging, I may start thinking more along these lines again.

my implant, my pee had mind of its own. peed into a quart jar for 4 weeks. problem pointing no going. going will get better when swelling goes down.
