Some researchers in Japan noticed that in post-prostatectomy patients with negative surgical margins, 92% were recurrence-free after 5 years if they were blood type O vs.71% if they were blood type A. The association wasn't as strong with positive surgical margins, which seemed to confound the results.

Associations between ABO blood groups and biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy.

In Japan, type O is 30% of the population, and type A is 40%. (30% type B or AB)
In the US and Europe, type O is about 44% of the population, and type A is 42%. (14% type B or AB)

I was just curious whether type A is overrepresented among those of us who've had a recurrence. (Ignore Rh factor)

Probably just one of those meaningless associations.

Maybe so on the meaningless and maybe not. I have 0 but no recurrence on my uro's scale. Time will tell. Time is the only study for me, unless I find one that is positive to me. Then I have a nice breakfast of it. Now that i think of it I am already past 5 years but remain in a patient state of hope. Breakfast is my favorite meal! Again now that I think of it, Im not quite sure what the endpoint of hope is…at this point of time,at least.

Very interesting indeed. One can never tell where a seemingly meaningless association may lead. I will be very interested in the results of your survey.

Possibly related, here's an interesting discussion we had about a year ago on blood-type-versus-PCa-mortality:

The point of that thread: "…It seems that men with blood type AB are significantly less likely to develop lethal PCa than men with the other blood types (O, A, or B)."

It would be interesting to see how that fits in (if it does) with what the Japanese researchers are reporting.

I'm not surprised that the Japanese did a study of blood types and recurrence. They put a lot of stock in blood types as a personality predictor, just as many Americans do in astrological signage (My sign is Neon). Years back, when I worked in the Blood Banking industry many blood donors would call us to ask their blood type because they were on the 'Blood Type' Diet, following a book that was published on the subject. Personally, I think that blood type is closely connected to attitude; mine is B negative.
