RR, the "try" means exactly that. they can't promise more than that, because they don't know what they'll see once they are inside. Did you say earlier where you're located? As far as another MRI, that's up to your team, they probably think they have enough info to plan your surgery. Now it's time to get in shape, eat right, and get ready. Keep us posted.

I agree with waiting until they get in there but why then is the decision on the right side pre determined before surgery.
I have read that they tend to cut wider based on number of positive cores mine is 5/6 on the right side.
I'm in Europe I better not say anymore than that until after the Surgery ..it's a small country :)
I was told earlier if I waited six months they might want to do another MRI but recently I was told it is not necessary. Regards eating right with the Gall Bladder out and Diverticulitis I try to eat plain food. I play squash but I find the younger fellows run faster so I try to use the head more :)

River, I would guess, and I'm not a surgeon, that they are basing what they're saying based on your test results. It's likely the right side nerve is at the highest risk because of the tumor location. It's challenging to walk into the unknown like that. At some point we all have to trust their judgment to do the right thing for us.

Feel free to let us know how it goes from now till then. I know that I felt relief, not anxiety, when I walked into the hospital on surgery day. Oh, I understand what it means to become the 'old dog' that uses his head to beat the kids. I don't even try to keep up with them.

You are right about trusting the surgeon's judgement ...I had no problem with that previously re. Hernias & Gall bladder operations but somehow I find it harder to let go of the control on this one.
I guess the moral of the story is to let go and let God as I'm not in control here.

Regards the 'old dog' using his head yes, it's true ..I used to play against a guy who was 67 years old and he would wipe me off the court ..after the game he used to complain about his knees aching ..I won't tell you my response:)

Are you able to do other treatments? I am in my last two weeks of proton treatment. No side effects. Why would anyone do anything else? My Gleason was 7. 3 cores positive out of 12.

Mike, there are too many reasons to try and explain to why other people choose "anything else"! You'll understand eventually!

Hi guys, thanks for all your previous help.
I have open RP next week and I'm just wondering how much exercise (walking) is normal in the days after surgery ..I'm reasonably fit and otherwise in good health.
Is a 10 hour flight 5.5 weeks after RP realistic.

Well, 6 weeks post RALP you might be OK, as long as you're on a plane you can get up and walk around on during the flight. This is a good question for your surgeon.

As to post surgery walking - you have to gauge that based on how you're feeling. Do some everyday but don't over do. The first day or two, just take regular laps around your house. When you feel up to it 15, 20 minutes at a time outside would be good, but it varies a lot. Just see how you're feeling and walk as you feel able.

You'll be limited on lifting for many weeks so don't go back to the gym until the doc clears you.

re walking - I was told 15 minutes of every waking hour. My surgery was last December, so winter & snow. I used a "slalom course" with furniture gates to do all that walking inside our house. Super slalom included stairs to another level with more gates. For me, walking was not limited. Getting up from a chair, into or out of bed, sneezing - those were challenging for a week or so.

What I was meaning to say is that 6 weeks after surgery I wouldn't have been ready for a 10 hr plane ride.

Halbert, I was told by the nurse to wait 6 weeks before flying to avoid the risk of blood clots.
I notice you had RALP but I guess the internal healing takes as long either way.

Andrew, thanks for the tips ...it is a 5 day hospital stay here after open RP.

Wilderness, that was very clever ...don't know if I would get away with it as I think the Mrs. might have something to say if I tried building an obstacle course in the house:)

I had a couple of clients get together and buy concert tickets for me and them 5 weeks after surgery. Before the surgery, i asked the surgeon if i would be ok for that, he said, "5 weeks after surgery, you'll be fine, you can even get on a plane to Florida if you want to.

Thinking back, at the concert, i was still wearing a thin pad (shield) with a bit of leaking, but i think i could have done a 5 hour flight. Of course, everyone is different.
Just be sure, if you do it, to reserve an aisle seat

I'll see if I can get the surgeons opinion on flying.

It's been a long 6 months but now the time seems to be flying:)
