For those of you who have achieved full continence control after surgery.....

Now that you have gotten to the point of full control, who many Kegels do you do a day? How many sets, reps, etc?

I stopped after about 3 months. However, several years later I started leaking a little and started back for a couple of weeks. I did about 3 reps of about 10. I guess it depends on the individual but you can overdo it.

My brother in law has been continent from day one and he never did a Kegal In his life.

He's 6 weeks out. He says it feels as though "a muscle is cramping down there sometimes" but says he believes that will go away.



....but, then again, I've never met anyone like him. He pulled his own catheter out at home on day seven.

@Rob, thanks. I've been doing 4-5 sets of 10 a day, thinking of cutting back to 3 sets. Your post is helpful in that regard, think I'll try it.

@IT, dude you just made me cringe so bad, on the self de-catheterization. OMG! I guess it proves what Rob said, that everyone is different.
BTW you said your brother in law is 6 weeks out, I though I remember he was well into the journey and on HT? Maybe I was mistaken

It may be a couple of weeks further out. He had a 6 mo. Lupton shot about a week or 10 days ago and is scheduled to begin radiation at JH on June 22, I believe it is.

My sister found him on all fours in the bathroom after he pulled it out. It was Dr. Partin at JH who did his and told him it was "no problem" to pull it out by himself. His local uro couldn't believe it.

I lift weights approx every second days and I do a set of Kegels during my "rest" period between some of the weight sets. I probably do about 7 sets of 10. I will probably just keep doing it at the same rate even though I've reached full continence. An ounce of prevention . . . .

It seems like everyone is different. Just like everything else about PC.

I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WAS FULLY CONTINENT ON day 1, and he never really did Kegels consistently. He's 3 years post op and hasn't done one In A year.

Probably best to reduce gradually

I stopped after I have regained continence but recent did it again. Due to some urinary control issues when I was on IGRT. Normally 3 sets a day.

I never did them, my urologist also never recommended that either. Some guys go overboard on them, and tire the muscles, making their situations worse. Got to be a good balance there.

I did them a lot before surgery. I had a good urologist, and he recommended them. Was immediately continent. Started up a few weeks after surgery and did them a lot more. Stopped doing them about a year after surgery. I do start them up whenever I have the slightest dribble, and do them for a few weeks. I figure you have to excercise to stay in shape.

I consider myself fortunate. I had almost full control within weeks of surgery. I did the kegels and wore the pads for about 4 weeks afterwards just to be safe. I did have one accident soon after surgery, after passing out on the couch following a night out drinking. Fortunate for the leather couch! But other than that, I only feel a drip or two when passing gas. And I've also become much more fast to act on the urge to go than in the past. The pain of "holding" it on a long road trip is much more intense. So I only kegel when I think of it, which is almost never anymore.

There seem to be a lot of opinions regarding kegel exercises. My surgeon insisted that I practice them several times a day before and after surgery. He told me NOT to do these while urinating. I was just reading Patrick Walsh's Guide To Surviving Prostate Cancer. In the book he states "Perform these exercises ONLY when you're urinating; if you keep contracting these muscles throughout the day, you will overdo it - the sphincter tires easily - and you'll end up wetter than you would otherwise." So, what gives? Have doctors changed their ideas since the book was written?

I dont do Kegels! Doing Kegels brought on my Incontinence! However, I did do kegels during the 4 weeks I had to prepare for the op. I'm continent!

I do them occasionally when I am peeing to stop/start the flow. For the newbies it's a great way to "train" because know for sure you are doing them correctly.
