How long do you need to take PSA test after surgery?

I had surgery in 2007 for gleason 6 cancer, and every since then my psa has been zero.  Is there a point where I can stop taking psa tests and just assume I am completely cured and the cancer will never come back?

Every six months my uro insists I get a psa test and rectal exam with the finger, and I would like to know if there is some point where I can just say, no more, I am cured already.

I think that's up to you and your personality. I would maybe have the PSA done yearly and the finger as required (after a large PSA rise) I would consider myself cured, but that's me and my opinion only.

Personally, I'd think after this much time an annual PSA from your GP during a normal physical would be enough.

But I am not a doctor, just a random guy on the internet.

Why are you getting a DRE? They took you prostate out. What is he feeling for? Especially with no symptoms and undetectable PSA.

IM a g7(3+4). My surgeon has told me he wants PSA every three months for a year, then every 6?months for a year, then once. A year

Get your GP to do it at your annual exam...

Like shaba said, the uro tells me that they look for new growth, but still after 8 years and zero psa's, I would think this is a little over kill and new growth will not happen at this point,,,,or can it? 

Does anyone now of someone with my statistics of G6 , no positive margins, that they have a reoccurance after 8 years?

  My insurance does not cover the psa tests, so I have been paying out of pocket every 6 months  $150.

Not at all sure why you would need a DRE, but annual psa test until you are in late 70's seems appropriate. But with your pathology I would think you have absolutely no worries about recurrence. Lucky guy!!!
