Question for men who had radiation treatment

Have any of you had inguinal hernia repair surgery AFTER having completed radiation treatment?

If so, was it open OR laparoscopic surgery?

I had a consultation with a surgeon at Mayo a week ago while back there for a two year follow-up consultation with RO. He told me he needed to do an open surgery because of my eight week radiation treatment.

Had a second consultation last Thursday with a local surgeon who has done a lot of hernia surgeries. He wants to do the laparoscopic surgery and that my radiation treatment wouldn't cause any problem.

So my question for anyone who has had inguinal hernia surgery repair AFTER radiation treatment: Did you have open or laparoscopic surgery done? Any outcome, advice, or viewpoints will be appreciated.

I did. No issues for me. They did an open procedure. My surgeon said that kept him as far away from the radiation site as possible while still being able to fix the hernia.

However, I've heard of others here who've had the laparoscopic procedure and have done well.

Just get it done. The surgery and recovery were a bit painful, but I was back to work in a couple of weeks.

me too, 5 weeks after l have completed my 33 sessions IGRT..
I m a month post inguinal Hernia surgery (open type), I think complete healed already, no longer had pain or discomfort since last week.

It certainly makes sense to stay as far away as possible from the radiation site. The laparoscopic surgery does go deeper.

The initial healing goes faster with less pain with the laparoscopic. But the possible mesh movement is a worry.

Thanks for your help. Have noticed you do a lot of that.
BTW Andrew was my father's middle name.

Phil,
That was the other reason my surgeon wanted to do the open procedure - it let him put the mesh on the muscle away from the prostate and secure it better. Seems to have worked.

and "Andrew" is a true and noble name, glad he had the sense to have it.

Where did you hear of others who've had the laparoscopic hernia repair following radiation treatment? So far I have found very few men
who had the open surgery and none that had the laparoscopic.

Is there a good website that answers medical questions? Have had no luck with 'google'.

There was a guy here awhile ago reporting that. Don't remember the name. Also my surgeon sad it was possible, but not what he recommends post RT.

This is about the best forum I know of, but I've not done much searching for other general medical forums. I often will use the medical encyclopedia from Kaiser (my health provider) and I've found a good one at the Mayo client website and the NIH.
