Just wanted to report that we made it thru the biopsy today. Lots of apprehension before hand, but Steve said the pain was not that bad. Said the worst part was getting the antibiotic shot, so the lidocaine must have done its job well. (No take home antibiotics. Got the gentamicin shot & then one levoquin pill after and instructions to watch for infection -- fever, etc. and to call immediately if any symptoms.)
Steve said he heard the "stapler" 15 to 17 times, so they took quite a few tissue samples. I had a short discussion with the doc after. He is on vacation next week and he agreed to release results to us as soon as they are available thru an online system the Cleveland Clinic has called My Chart. Found this interesting, but he said the slides will be read by a pathologist who ONLY does prostate slides. He understood us wanting to have them sent to Bostwick or Epstein for the second opinion, but said we had to initiate that process.
Steve has not slept much the past two nights and is napping now. He seems peaceful for the first time in weeks and I am thankful for that.
So now the waiting begins. Thanks to all here for the info and support and general hand-holding. Knowledge really is power and I feel like we are getting more powerful every day.

I know the waiting is not necessarily easy, but think of this as an opportunity to relax for now. Do let us know what you hear and good luck to you and Steve!

Glad it went smoothly. Now the wait. Try not to think about
it, although i know thats hard to do. At this point its in the hands of the Gods.
But as i remember myself, the anticipation of the first biopsy was horrible, not knowing what to expect. So i'm glad thats over for you guys

Glad to hear he is resting. You need to as well.
MyChart is a great tool, have used it for years. Allows you access to the physician so you can ask questions, schedule appointments, renew prescript
ions, get test results etc. I will often get my PSA results within 24 hours of the blood draw.
Let me know what I can do.

I am a pathologist who also wanted to have an "expert" read my slides. I chose Dr. Epstein and he gives an additional service in that after reading your slides he will discuss with you on the phone what he feels are the choices that you have for treatment.
Good Luck!

Thx for your offer to help, Samster. We plan to be in touch once we get the biopsy report. After the biopsy on Thursday, Steve slept the rest of the day and I kicked back too, but Friday and today have been "keep busy" days for us. Steve is feeling good with very little soreness and no traces of blood in urine.
Catfan- Thx for that info about
Dr. Epstein. That additional service he provides sounds invaluable to me. Do you live near Duke? My in-laws live in Garner (near Raleigh). FIL was dx'd with PCa 20 years ago. Recurred 6 years later, but still doing great.
Having gorgeous weather in Cleveland today.

Live in Eastern North Carolina. Went to Duke because of reputation. Surgeon was Dr Ferandino. I think he did a good job but since I am only 2.5 weeks out time will tell.

Catfan - did not realize your surgery was so recent. Read your signature to get up to speed. I wish you the very best as you continue to recover.
