traveling with trimix/bimix and airport security

Is this going to be a problem? I'm wondering if we can pre-fill a couple syringes and bring them, or if we need to bring the precious bottle.

Will security be questioning it or can we carry the syringes thru. The syringe bag and the bag with the bottle have the prescription information on them. I have a small insulated diabetes bag with a small freeze pack, and the places we stay have refrigerators,. My fear is that the tsa security will embarrass us by asking what its for, and/or refuse to let it thru.

DH won't bring a VED due to the embarrassment factor at security either.

We're going to the pacific NW for 9 days for a much needed vacation.

Does anyone have experience with this? It sure would be convenient to just bring a few pre-filled syringes.

I can't speak to airport, but when I went through the check in on our cruise, they saw the syringes in the scan and asked me what they were. Wasn't a big deal. I took my Trimix in the bottle and had that on ice. It made it through customs with no problems. Best of luck.

Jay, thanks. I assume lots of people with diabetes or other conditions need to travel with syringes, but it's awkward feeling anyway. Diabetes raises no eyebrows.

I've carried tri-mix vials in an insulin bag with ice pack through TSA security checkpoints many times with not one problem. But I didn't have my syringes filled with the tri-mix - they were packed in my checked baggage. The first time I went through security with the kit, I made sure the TSA agent knew I was carrying chilled medications but the agent didn't care. She just waved me through. Now I don't make a big deal of it and no agent has ever made an issue of it either.

Your DH may be right to not bring his VED with him. I bring mine in my carry-on bag (don't want it damaged in the cargo hold). At one check-in, a lady TSA agent went through my carry-on bag and pulled out the little case I carry the VED in. She removed the disassembled VED and inspected it piece-by-piece ... until she realized what it was and what it was used for. LOL, she couldn't get it back into the case fast enough. I was laughing until I boarded the flight!

A small bottle in a bag with an ice pack should be just fine. The TSA makes a big deal out of declaring it before screening.

I travel with prefilled syringes for my RA all the time. I have never been questioned at all.

Mike, good to know it is so easy! and that is very funny about the VED! However, I wouldn't want that experience:) Thanks.

Andrew, I called tsa this morning (before I checked in with this forum) and asked about the pre filled syringes. I have to say I was impressed that after a couple automated choices, a live human being answered my call. So refreshing after a year of waiting on hold, being redirected, leaving vm, and playing phone tag with all the doctors. She said it's fine to bring pre filled syringes, and I don't need a script. She said just put the pack by its self in a bin.

I have never traveled by air with Trimix or syringes. But I have traveled with a VED. I just put it in my checked baggage. I would do the same with the Trimix and the cooling bags. In fact, wrapping it in clothes adds to the insulation and keeps it colder, longer. I would make a copy of the prescription with my cell phone number attached and put that either in the bag or wrapped around the package just in case someone has any questions.
I'm a 62 year old adult and shouldn't be embarrassed about anything but I, too, would be mortified if a TSA agent took out my VED or pee pads and asked questions. I'm much more confident if it's in my luggage.

I have traveled by air many times ( inside the US and International) with my trimix vial (on ice) and syringes passing through TSA with no one asking anything...it is a prescribed medication and you just need your prescriptions with you in case you are questioned...I would not put in my checked bags..someone might decide they want them or they look suspecious and then you loose them.

Just my experiences....

our dgd is diabetic. when she comes to visit with her family, ds packs as many as 50 syringes plus a bottle of insulin in his carry on. TSA has never said anything or ever asked him to open the bag. I find this rather scary and wonder how effective airport security really is. :(
