Yesterday, I was just not feeling so great. I was not really short of breath, but every so often I felt the need to take a deeper breath.
Then last night, I was feeling worse and on a whim took my blood pressure. It was scary high, about
210/110.
We were ready to go to the ER. I do know that I have been rather sedentary the past week. I've been having some shoulder issues so I stopped doing upper body workouts. I am doing P/T for the shoulder and I hope to return to my workouts soon. Also, I have not done much walking or cardio stuff -- just lazy for the past 10 days. I've also been very busy with other stuff.
So, before heading to the ER, I headed to the treadmill. I did some regular brisque walking on it for 15 minutes. I then sat down and 5 minutes later did my BP. It was down to about
150/99. Still not good, but enough to cancel that ER trip, and enough to warn me to get off my rear end and get back in the groove.
So today I woke up feeling much better. I went back to the gym to do some cardio stuff. It amounted to about
a 40 minute workout (brisque walk to and from gym -- about
0.8 miles each way and a 20-minute harder workout on the elliptical). Tonight I took my B/P and it was 115/65. That's much more like it, and more typical.
In fact, I've felt fine today. No need to breathe extra deep. No issues. I also gave myself a break from my meds (casodex and metformin).
Any ideas what might have caused this? I strongly suspected metformin, but I do not see these issues listed as SE. But I DO see these issues highlighted as Casodex SE. I am also on Lupron.
Anybody else have such as issue. I might add that I have had some sudden bouts of higher B/P (nothing close to the figures of last night) that did resolve when I increased my exercise regimen.

Get a complete cardio workup, its nothing to mess with. Do not self diagnose. Just do it! I would lay of the exercise till cleared by a cardiologist. You should have gone to the ER. GaurensBallbearens…with your age and that blood pressure you would have been admitted to the hospital and would had quite a few of the requisite tests already. Last August I came down with an e coli infection the doc figured I got from fecal matter in the ocean while surfing. I routinely get banged up on the reef and rocks. I got the chills so bad I could hardly breathe and was so tight I feared cardiac arrest with soaring BP in the numbers you mentioned. Took the ambulance2 2 in the morning was admitted with a antibiotic resistant strain, had iv antibiotics for 48 hours straight and every heart test they could find. Five days later released with a five day couse of tablet antibiotics. I some times wonder if that ordeal had anything to do with my psa rise later. I was a sick puppy. Get on it...wishing and hoping is not what you need but good old tried and true medical attention is.

about
4 years ago I went to the ER due to some issues. I was there for 3 nights and did various tests, including a stress test and other stuff. I had suspected it was a reaction to a statin drug I was taking at that time.
Anyway, they found nothing. I spent most of that time waiting around. I hated it so much we swore never again unless we REALLY felt it was a true emergency.
Well, had the bp remained that high, we would have gone.
Anyway, Logo, I know your advice is probably correct, because if someone else made that post, I would have said the same thing: get to the ER NOW.
Anyway, I seem to be just fine now. Not sure what that was. I am going to get back on the medications tonight and we shall see.
I am posting this to see if anyone else had this happen.

Roger that... I still think a cardiac workup…for any older man is a good idea. they will code it so insurance covers all. I realize you may not want to be part of the problem with rising medical costs. I used to think the same thing, but ya know, Its all going to sort it self out{ the endemic problems in every institution} Or it isn't. the human species will survive, will populate the universe and all will be well. having said that there will be plenty wold trauma possibly worse than the 20th century. Who knows?… Im just along for the ride and plan on enjoying every bit… there is a lot to enjoy when you bury angst. Good luck with your ride… Its difficult to stay on an exercise plan…more so as we age. But what else ya got o do. saying screw it aint it. Life is a daily struggle always is …always has been…must find meaning where you can..create meaning… pretend you have everything…then give it away…you will not be able to because it keeps filling up. Life is not an endurance contest…Its everything and the only thing that exists.simple yet not. take care compiler...

Mel, not sure how I missed this thread till now, but now that I'm reading it, I agree with logo.
Seriously, it's great that you are feeling better, but you should still see a cardiologist, tell him what happened, and let him do whatever tests he thinks necessary. This is the kind of stuff you don't mess with, trust me, I know.
Get it checked out, without delay. It's probably nothing ,and maybe the side effects as you suspect, but better safe than sorry.

I will bring it up next time I see my doctor and see what he thinks.
I remain just fine today.
I did resume my meds this evening.
Definitely not an ER situation right now, but worth mentioning as a concern.

That, and almost complete loss of feeling in my left leg (which hid the fact that I was having massive gout issues as well), are the two big reasons they pulled me off casodex. Add that to the fact that my PSA rise did not slow in the slightest with several months of casodex on top of Lupron.
I would bump up the next doc visit. Call and explain the issue, get in there sooner.

Thought I would give an update. The issue I mentioned in my OP has not repeated itself. I am about
90% convinced that one of my medications is causing the issue. When I take all my meds., about
5 hours later (like clockwork) some of those breathing symptoms return. I now take the meds at night.
I also took a one-day vacation from the meds and had no issues. I am now back on all meds except metformin, and I am going to see what happens. I suspect it may well be the Casodex, but it could be the metformin. So far, no issues. Assuming that continues, I'll add back the metformin and see what happens.
Recent BP readings have pretty much been in the 115-128/65-85 range, mostly at the lower end.
Anyone else have any ideas? I am also taking vit. D-3 and Pomi-T and and Mega Red Joint Relief (krill oil, for knee issues). I guess it could be anything. But right now, all is well, sans metformin

I did a little internet check and a couple of medical sites list rapid heart beat as a rare side effect of metformin, so it's very possible that is your culprit.
Of course, Casodex also lists heart rate changes and hypertension in the side effect list. I think your theory of it's the meds is likely the reason.
Likely, it's a matter of getting the balance of meds right or possibly timing when each is taken.
Still you might want to ask for a cardio workup just as a precaution, but likely that won't show much.

Compiler, have they done liver panel bloodwork on you?
I was taking 50mg Casodex, daily and my liver numbers went through the roof. I had to cut back to every other day. Dr. Turner of Scholz-Lam-Turner.
Plus, I found that blood pressure varies 10 points in a two minute interval. Should average a few tests.

It varied by more than that!
This is from a post I did in reply to someone else:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I had a similar situation and it turned out to be a SE of Casodex, which I was taking with Lupron. Upon stopping the Casodex, my liver numbers turned completely normal, within 2 weeks. The liver is an amazing self-healing organ, as long as you don't let things go too far. I was actually able to resume Casodex with no repeat of the problems!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I do have a phone consultation with Dr, Lam set for Wednesday. I suspect we are due for some more testing!

I've had low, healthy blood pressure all my life. Just before my biopsy, I went for for the pre biopsy check up. Had high blood pressure then. I don't know if it was stress or just being nervous. I work out a few days a week and don't each too much garbage. Plan to get it checked again soon. Jack

i've been checking my bp a few times a day since this incident.
A few hours ago, it was 115/78. That has pretty much been the story. It almost seems like that was a bad dream!
