Hi friends, I feel like I have had the most frustrating two days.  Someone has turned the page and I have found out I am on the last chapter of the book. We went to U of Michigan on Tue and saw the radiation dr who is a great physician.  She said she is going to try radio-embolism therapy on Steve.  They put radiation beads right in the liver tumor.  She has never done this for prostate cancer but is willing to try.  Yeaaaa some who is thinking out of the box and brave enough to try something new. We scheduled the arteriogram for thur which is a way to map the way to place the beads. We also finally got the biopsy scheduled for thur to see if chemo will kill the cancer in the liver.  On the drive home I get a call from radiology they can not do the arteriogram as Steves kidney lab work came back abnormal.  Whaaaat now he has kidney problems???

Steve has been very sick not able to eat at all.  Drinking but throwing it up for days.  Temp up every night.

Wed saw our oncologist who I do not like but we have had him for 6 years and Steve likes him.  He showed so much concern it was great how he acted.  He said "I need to get Steve feeling better right now". So in to infusion room for IV meds and IV fluids. 

Than he talkes to us.  He is sure the psa is so high because the liver cancer is growing agressively.  All of Steves problems are because of the extensive liver mets.  His lab values were all crazy.  We can not have radiation or chemo or liver biopsy because Steves liver mets has grown to much and nothing is going to work now. His words " I can not fix the liver now.  I can make Steve comfortable. "  He was sure the kidney labs were out of wack because Steve was so dehydrated.  Steves elavated temp is from liver tumors. Everything he is going through is "normal" for all the cancer he has and is expected.

I read what you write and think atleast that is not us yet. But after today it is me.  I think my heart can not hurt any more and than I read something you are going though and my heart must grow because I am sure it is hurting more. I am so sorry for all we are going through. Carol

I am in tears as I read your post and the posts of the others. We find a thread of hope to grasp and then have it completely dashed. What is Steve's reaction to what was said?
Is he feeling better after the infusions and not throwing up?
I am so so sorry for this news and I wish there was something that I could say to lesson the pain and heartbreak, but I know there is nothing anyone can do to ease the agony we all feel watching our precious men suffer!

Dad has just started on a different hormone injection called leuprorelin acetate we have been told that he has weeks and not months to live the oncology consultant dose not expect the new hormone treatment to extend his life but thought its worth a try.

Dad has lost a lot of weight was 10st 10lb and now is under 7st unable to eat meat and only manages soup, complan Supplements and a high calorie boost.

Pain is now under control with patches, Oxycodone and gabapentin, with main pain being shoulders, hip, spine and top to both legs. mobility is very poor.

Dad has a lot of mucus in the throat which he cannot clear, this is causing him quite a bit of distress, when he stands it just pours out of his nose. suffering with sickness badly some days and not at all other days.

Mum is holding up well but I see the strain on her face, Dad is a fighter and does his best to get up wash and dress every day. On a good day he will have a little walk in the garden. I try to take him out in the car as often as possible and he has lots of visitors.

Although Dad is elderly I find it so hard to see the fit man changed into such a frail man struggling to keep going.

I feel for all you that are caring for your loved ones, its such a hard journey keep fighting you are all fantastic.

Carol; and every one . The liver mets have changed the parameter of the cancer from the metastic bone disease that can be a managed cancer . Liver mets are something totally else and I am glad Carol that Steve is being spared the pain aspect. The sickness is not good at all. I noficed a downward trend in Daves apetite for the past couple of weeks less and less. I don't know if the liver is having a hard time processing what it needs to do and if the body is bei g signaled not to eat becsuse of the problem. They did put Dave on the steriod dexamethasone 2 -4mlg each day. May control liver pain increase apetite, help control the wretched sweats .Maybe something like this will help Steve .

The oncologist apt for us is next Wed , Mon is ct and bone scans. I have a feeling they may want to take Dave off the zytiga . What it is doing right now wouldn't probably be worth the hassle of pill timing 2 hrs empty stomach and
I hr after nothing . BUT when there is treatment going on there is always hope. Carol I didn't think this would ever be me posting about this uncontrollable cancer killing my husband either When you start riding this ride it seems like the end of it is millions of days, years away but then In one second of time the years and days are less. When I read what every one shares and how each one of us struggles with getting care it totally breaks my heart because none of us should ever be delt a diagnosis of PC .A really good freind of mine said try to find something that the two of you can laugh about every day no matter how hard every thing is right now finding some joy for just a few miniuets is better than not at all. I think she is right for our hubbys sake even just a few moments that aren't about this has to be good for them. Well of you have inspired me showered me with your love thoughts and freinship and out of something as bad as what has happened I am lucky and eternally grateful for "US" love you all Sue💙 XOXO

Carol, I just want to reach through this dratted monitor and give you a huge hug. This is so sad but, I certainly would not give up hope. That is easier said than done, I know. I also know one young man whose liver was completely destroyed by cancer - just 5-10% operating. He was given the same Johns Hopkins developed "substance" as Don is on and the cancer left completely. He is now considered a "case history" and written up. Sadly, he died a year later (after being trekked abound the US medical schools as a demonstration of how even the worst cancer is curable), from pneumonia I believe. He was given a drug that the small remaining part of his liver could not handle. His autopsy showed no evidence of cancer. I give this substance to Don every day. I cannot say it is working as I cannot give it to him via TACE (arterial), only IV and topical. But for us, it represents hope and we keep trying. Actually, it is not defined as a drug, even though Johns Hopkins and MDA are bringing it to trial, so nothing illegal there. I have probably said too much as I know everyone here goes with conventional oncology and this "ain't there yet." So I apologise in advance if I have upset anyone's sensibilities. xx

Sue, you and everyone here are so brave. I agree with the laughter. Or finding a treasured moment that doesn't relate to disease or hospitals or DRIVING, DRIVING, DRIVING. Bernie Siegel is a big proponent of laughter and belief, and I believe they can bring on a state in the body that is often called a miracle. So thanks for reminding us of that...xx

Hi friends day 3 for medical appointments.  Just got home from getting a transfusion.  Steves feelings go up and down all the time.  But we hear good news in the am than bad news in pm.  When he feels bad he does not want to deal with any of it just leave me alone, never mean just need quite down time.  We got the Iv meds and Iv fluids done at 4 pm he felt much better.  At midnight he got up from sleeping and threw up. They did start him on Dexamethasone last week and yesterday oncologist up the dose to 1 pill bid.

Today must be a negative day for me because I read hope and laughter and think how can you when your are watching your love one in pain/not eat/throw up/ sleep alot/ cry.  I have alot family/ friends / a great support team but all I have to tell them is sad news. I pray all the time but now I pray for strength instead of treatments to work.  When my blessings are thanks for pain meds / eating two bites of dinner/ he stayed awake thorugh the whole prayer how can I feel good.

I know this is bad time because the news is getting out to family /friends Steve is doing bad and there is no more treatments and soon I will get over this phase and move on.  I will stand up and face the next chapter of my life stronger. Thank you for letting me vent as I poor out my feelings to you. I am so sorry you are in the same situation as me but so glad I am not alone. Carol

Carol dear, you are absolutely right - you are not alone, but I do know we wish we were there to help and comfort you. I'm glad you can express yourself here - when you said a few posts ago "I read what you write and think at least that is not us yet." I know exactly what you meant and I know someday that will change for us, too. The deep sadness you're feeling is appropriate for the place you and Steve are in. I'm so sorry.

So while we are currently in bad news territory we just had more dropped on to us .PSA results from yesterday 6,045 up from last one 4,334 . They want to stop the zytiga effective now. So once again I feel cancer is not being halted just allowed to keep on multipling. Carol , Dave and Steve are right in the exact same place with the liver involvement. My daughter found the name of a drug for the liver mets and when she sends it to me later I will post it tomorrow. I am trying to ser where a blood transfusion can be fit in . Home care is coming tomorrow to start daily hydration . Mon bone and ct , hydration at cancer centre , breathing test part # 2 on Wed with oncologist as well as hydration. I think he will be under 100 in hemoglobin and that is the # he needs to be maintained to . Our daughter and son in law and 3 grandkids are coming to visit on Saturday . I know it will be tiring for Dave but I am just going to order in the kids will always eat pizza. I will try to enjoy the visit and relax . I don't think i know how to do that any more my mind is constantly going and keeping every thing for Dave organized and running smoothly takes alot. I know you all cam relate . Well hope we all have alot of better days we can enjoy .

Re the Zytiga Sue...and Xtandi...there's another similar drug whose name escapes me, but I can find out. It is perhaps in development. It works on the AR but not on the same segment as Zytiga and Xtandi (which is quite possibly missing in Dave - you know, the ARV7 variant). Has he tried ketaconozole? It's a little old fashioned, as Zytiga replaced it, but there is a guy in our naturopathic onc's office for whom nothing worked, so the naturopath prescribed ketaconozole. His PSA dropped quite significantly. Doc Myers used to use it and maybe still does. It's still a nasty drug IMO.

Glad the family's coming over!

Don had two units of blood today and has crashed on the sofa. He's now having a port put in. I don't like the idea of my putting anything so close to the heart so may relegate duties to someone else with a licence to do it.

Good Morning; every one Corbie sent me he name of the drug for liver cancer .name is Nexavar (sorafenib) and is said to supply overall survival with advanced liver cancer . So of course our oncologist is on holidays til next week. But Carol and others battling these liver mets maybe it will help some of your guys. It comes with the product monogram off 500 thigs ofvside affects . But can any of us say we aren't willing to try anything. I know Dave and I have nothing to loose. If it doesn't work you just stop taking it. Well home care for hydration today .The pharmacy delivered home care supplies here at pm last night . Well have good day every one Love and Hugs 💙 XOXO Sue

My heart breaks for you all every time I come to this thread, but I keep coming back. I truly hope you find some peace, and there is no way to express my wish that your pain and hardship would stop.
I went through it with my mom, 30 years ago and I still vividly remember the pain I felt. I can't imagine what it must be like to experience that with a life partner.

Beejane, I get your point and it was very well put, and still sensitive to the feelings of those suffering.
With that said, I understand how the rest of you feel, it's the human spirit to fight and not give up, I say that as long as your spouses are willing to fight, support them in that willingness and fight on. IF they have the will, they deserve that support.

Thank you Pratoman. And many with that "fight" have lived to write books about it, or gently inspire others from the sidelines. There are many, many substances out there, including repurposed approved drugs that disable cancer cells. Unfortunately, they are not within "standard of care" and so doctors won't use them and patients won't trust them. I have seen arguably the most promising anti-cancer drug in development referred to as "snake oil" by those with no scientific background who arbitrarily decide it to be so. Their doctors haven't heard of it, therefore it doesn't exist (and if it does, it's some sort of scam, despite the fact two top USA cancer hospital medical departments are attempting to perfect its delivery and get it to trials/market).

Of course, for many people, the cat and mouse game will continue with the cat finding a way to win. I'll never give in to that cat and neither will my husband. Eventually, it may get the mouse, but every possible avenue will have been explored and we will both rest knowing that has been done.

When my mother passed from breast cancer in 1975, she fought long and hard and so did her four daughters. Not once did any of us consider our efforts to equate to "longer prolonged dying." On the contrary, we were helping her live longer and there were many happy moments in that time. That was 40 years ago. In terms of pain control we have advanced significantly.

Although I do not speak for all thread members, I do for some. I find this comment completely unnecessary, no matter that you have preceded it with not wanting it to appear harsh. We are here to support and to bolster each other up when we need it. Most of us are trying to allow our loved ones remain longer with us, and are well aware of the realities of what we are up against. We have all seen vomit, blood, diarrhea, etc. So when we come here to hold each other up and we read about cancer invading other parts BECAUSE we are somehow encouraging holding on, it can be extremely upsetting. I am sure that was not your intent but, unfortunately it came across that way, along with other, previous remarks about the dying process. Please allow us to support one another realistically and with empathy. We have all experienced dying family members and it is a horribly sad process. For now, we want only for them to live and to share experiences that may help them do that. Wishing you well...

Thank You for that post, Antonia. Personally, I was quite shaken by BeeJane's overly descriptive post. I have lost 2 brothers and 2 sisters in the past 6 years. I was caretaker for my brother who had esophageal cancer until his last breath 18 months ago. I was present when my beloved sister passed and my mother. I am well acquainted with death and the process, as many here are, so I do not need that vivid picture painted for me.

My husband and I have had some of the most important talks of our marriage in the wee hours of the morning holding hands with many tears shed and good laughs between us. I will never forget this time.
I will see to it that as long as my husband wants to be here I will help him in any way possible. When he says no more that's how it shall be. I will stand with anyone here, as we do for each other, to offer love and yes, hope. I believe that is a good thing.

Antonia, Sue, Carol, Beth, Krissy, Jane & Theresa - You're in my thoughts and lets hope for a better tomorrow.

I don't want to turn this post into a "choosing sides" sort of thing, but I get what BeeJane is saying. Gary's mom gave me a little "gut check" on that one a while back when I was complaining about Gary not wanting to be more involved in his treatment choices and allowing his oncologist to make all decisions without question. I have had many days when I thought he couldn't survive another week feeling as bad as he did. But his oncologist gave good advice when he said to make no decisions about continuing treatment when you're feeling really bad.
I will allow Gary to decide when he's had enough and believe the doc about making sure he will suffer minimally. I believe in miracles, but the miracle is that he has had five mostly good years of qol, and has been an inspiration to everyone who knows and can't help but love him.
A few years back we watched a friend's wife go through a year of treatments and suffering from desperate attempts to treat pancreatic cancer. Many surgeries and no real qol, but her husband just begged her to keep fighting. She died in a lot of pain in the hospital and not at home.
My brother in law had failed heart surgery he should have never had due to extensive damage of heart and recent strokes. He was in coma for months on ventilator, and finally had to remove feeding tube to starve the 300 lb guy.
I am not trying to be a downer and I have been around enough for you to know I remain hopeful and positive.
But I will always respect Gary's wish to only remain with me if he has the quality of life he wants, and only he can determine what that is.
It's so hard and we feel so hopeless. As women and moms we want to fix it, and if we can't fix our guys we sure as heck aren't going down easy!
There is no reason to get upset at BeeJane, IMO, because I read the sympathy she was trying to convey at the amount of suffering our guys are enduring.

Since this thread, which was supportive and wonderful, has suddenly become the exact opposite, I will not be participating or reading any more. I wish everyone here the very best and will continue to email my friends who need support and who give it so generously. I hope your guys all pull through and that, should they not, that everything happens in the manner you wish. Love, blessings and hope to you all.

Warriors----- Don't be fighting amongst each other! What are you thinking?!? I know I have been away (seems like forever after reading all the posts I missed).... but please please PLEASE remember we are ALL fighting the same fight and in this together!

All the hope I have gotten, all the information, and all the support here means so much to both Paul and I.... I can't even imagine where we would be without you all....

Please take a breather if you must, but please don't anyone go anywhere! I need ALL of you!

That said- sorry for the long absence. I haven't been feeling great and had to contend with Stats class. Its done now and I got a 92 (A-), feeling I should have got better. The ills are pain from this liver cyst and probably my ulcerative colitis acting up. Not sleeping great, tired an awful lot.

Saw a surgeon about liver and he no longer does the liver surgeries but will send me to a top doc if needed but first had to hae consult with GI (done) and now scoping both up and down both ends on the 31st.... Yay me..... The pain I am having is right where the large liver cyst is (which usually doesn't cause pain but can if on edges) and this is def NOT cancer just a cyst getting bigger over the years. Soooo.... It looks like scoping, then MRI on liver, then who knows.

Bad news? All the planning, day off and $$ spent on trip and non refundable hotel, the temps... Paul's oral surgery we had scheduled didn't happen! Even after calling 3 times to verify he didn't need preop clearance I still got it from his PCP and we had it from cardiology too but nothing in writing. The jerk oral surgeons after we got there said they wanted his cardiac MDs blessing.... I got him one the phone... Then they wanted his ekg, etc. THEN they wanted his entire cardiac history!! WTH.... By that time it was nearing 3ish on a Friday afternoon and 3 residents wanted to go and pregame the weekend early I think. NOTHING would get them to agree!! So a trip and planning for NOTHING. Poor Paul...

He said he wanted to nail the partials to the wall of the garage and see if he or they went first...... Thinks that this is a pattern of no's.... that will continue....

The good news is a few days later I had him backstage at Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago show!! He had no idea until we were on the way there and was thrilled!

He has had some pain, but labs this week show PSA steady at 0.13 and anemia same too but not low iron so prob from Lupron. His incisional hernia is big pain, but we discussed that at my surgeons apt and the doc will do that and is very good at it! So he got a free consult and something to think about.

The dental school now saying they want to do in OR despite a very informative and somewhat scathing letter from his cardiologist who is prob mad they did that to him.... The OR puts this out of our range and we already lost over $1,000 just on wasted trip they could have told us here and not such a long trip away. I will renew this fight very soon.... looking into things now.....

Paul had been super depressed about it but then the concert, and yesterday he went kayaking by himself for a bit on a nice lake nearby!!

Me? School prep for the actual RN-MSN program (jumping through hoops!) as it starts next Monday.... the stats was a prereq I needed and cheaper through another school....Preparing for the big trip to Cali (and debating LA for the conference- can see his nieces and SIL and a friend of mine if we go to LA)... Not feeling my best and bloaty and feel kinda worn out and so weak lately. But I trudge on of course.....

And good news- we have both managed to quit smoking!! Yipee!

Lisa... was it Ultram (tramadol) that caused hallucinations? seen that a lot in my work....

I see everyone fighting this cancer so hard, fighting the careless and clueless and tactless medical professionals and then I get to the end and see a mini assault seems to have happened and cant help but think that its lashing out because of the situations and not truly about anything else in particular. When people are struggling to find answers, hold on to that hope and see someone suffer the way you all are.... this can happen. Everyone is hurting.... so much more lately it seems...... Lets direct that anger into something positive if we can (Maybe that is the issue- nothing much positive coming at everyone?).......

Sorry for the novel- it could be pages and pages longer if I put ALL I want to share and ask, but I will give your eyes a rest. Just know even when I am not on here I am always thinking of you all so much..... I actually imagine your days and what you must be doing, thinking and feeling.....

PS.... I had done a 23andme gene test for a lupus study and the kit was free. For some reason I didn't think I would get any data for a very long time (if ever) but I did!!

There is a program we can use to plug in the raw data that gives the medical info they can't give people in the USA as its now blocked by FDA.... that cost $5.00.....

Not huge surprises but have some genes that make absorption of some drugs affected including NSAIDS, Coumadin, and some chemos! Good to know.... High risk for Alzheimer's, HUGE risk for autoimmune including lupus, chrons and other, and a large risk for lung issues (via Alpha-1 antitrypsin), some of the BRCA 1 & 2 mutations but likely not the worst.

The thing we laughed about is my Pca risk is high (good thing I don't have a nut!) and Paul has been joking I must have given it to him lol!

I can't explain how important this thread is to me. I don't post on it because we are in the calm before the castrate-resistant bone mets storm.

But reading the posts by those of you further down the road is painful and comforting, horrible and helpful. This to me is a safe place--everyone should be able to speak their truth--jane, antonia, sue and all the regulars and visitors with no judgment. I count on this thread and others like it to provide that sage and safe place. Here, we can say to each other what we can't say to anyone else. I hope everyone can stay engaged.

Sorry my friends each and every one of you if it seems like I have been Missing in Action. I have been running the roads with my icreasingly ill husband. I know each and every single one of you reading this format know this only to well So this is how our days have played out since last Wed . The palliative care Dr wanted Dave to stop fragmin because the risk of bleeding to death is more of a concern that the risk of a DVT. That is hard to give up that crutch of not getting a Dvt. We now have the added stress of watching for that . The liver mets ard now worse of the cancer invading Daves body. They still don't want to offer anything for slowing or stopping this. I see Dave the man I love with all my heart and I know I am losing him But I want to hang on to him for as many days as I can. I know I will never want to let him go because that day my heart will bust in a million peices . I am however not sadistic , if he is ever in excruciating pain and I am keeping him alive when his body and mind has said enough! I will be the one holding him in my arms when God comes to take him home and set him free from pain . I don't think there is one single person reading this that wouldn't agree. BUT this is maybe where there may be disagreement and every single person here is individual and has ideas of there own and thats a good (great thing) we are all diffrent unique and that is why a format like this is good. We learn from each other have respect and know we are all stressed have bad days bad moods , bad hair days BUT at the end of each day I cant tell you how much I have learned and how close I have felt to you all. This is real our husbands, Dads , brothers are being taken away from us bit by bit. There are however sucess stories of some lucky ones finding tis early when its curable or the magic pill is found. Yesterday I pulled a 23 hr day Dave on Friday had blood in his urine. By Saturday at 5 am it wasn't just some blood his urine was just all blood. I made the decision to drive the 120 kms to Kingston because the cancer centre runs out of that hospital. It was the best choice we were in a emergency room cubicle by quarter to eighft. He had seen a resident Dr a nurse did catheter they flushed his bladder with six huge bags of fluid . The did a cbc his platelets had fallen to 28 they gave a bag of platelets also a bag of blood as hemoglobin was 98 and for Dave under a 100 is low and letting him fall to the 68 mark could kill him. We saw 2 more drs as well as a urologist. By 9 yesterday evening he had taken the catheter out flushed the bladder and uretha of blood clots and debris, hopefully dead cancer tissue..yes I helped and assisted urologist. So I had no sleep as we were finally discharged at 3 I the morning and I drove us home and was gone to bed by 4:15 and slept until 8am . I ran on adrenaline 2 muffins , I bage of chips half a chicken salad sandwich. Coffee and lots of it. So I don't know if reducing drugs caused this or not using the zytiga because they told us to stop that on Friday ??? All I know is Dave is getting more and more things going wrong and I am looking for the magic pill or anything and there is getting to be lees and less for us and remember my heart its busting with saddness that only you freinds can relate to . I hope no ones leaves this post because for us freinds and support through this is sometimes the thing we need to read when life has just buried us in lemons. .I know it doesn't matter if we are older or younger we sre all diffrent BUT we are all women tied by a horrible disease and now each of you ia my friend my support network . But I wanted to fill you in tomorrow is bone and ct scans , Wed results and oncologist apt. But I had better go to sleep we need to be on the road for 8 30 for Kingston Love and hugs 💙 Freinds
