Cancer sniffing dogs

Sunday on a NPR radio station there was a story about a Doctor that trained dogs that could detect cancer through their sense of smell. She had breast cancer and her dog was the first to detect the cancer. The Doctor went on to explain that the dogs would be most beneficial to detect pc since it is sometimes hard to detect.

Before my biopsy came back positive I read that sometimes the biopsy misses the cancer because the samples taken aren't the cancerous ones. When my biopsy came back positive I told my wife that now I didn't have to worry that the cancer had been missed.

I know that with the knowledge of the people on this board that I'm not telling you anything new. Just wondering if anyone had heard how far along this use of dogs might be. Guys facing the uncertainty and guys looking now at PSA scores could be helped.

Before my RALP, I was attacked by a dog that bit me.
A few years ago, a good friend with terminal cancer visited my house. Our white west highland terrier attacked him.

There has been some very positive research on this. I think the problem though is financial. you can't patent a dog. and it's hard to scale a dog. So training a dog to detect cancer is only the first step. Step 2 is figuring out what molecule the dog is sniffing. Step 3 is to invent a machine that can be patented, built in volume, and is as accurate as a dog's nose. Patent that. Then spend 5-10 years in FDA trials to prove it works.

So that's what they mean when they call it a LAB test!!!!!
