Ziggy, it's not required that you understand why some people can't handle doing AS, just that you accept that some men don't feel they are cut out for it (pun intended). In the end, it's a personal decision by a particular man and his family, and passing judgment on him is singularly unhelpful.
To the OP, this is a great statement. I think particularly that expansion of the section on 'finding an AS program and physicians who will support you in it' is needed. Access to programs includes the actual ability to physically participate. For some, the idea of having to take a full day off work once every 3 or 6 months to check in at the program site is too much. For others, it's no biggie. As tools like Mp-MRI get more widespread then it will get easier.
Let me put it this way. I see little difference in the fear and anxiety one experiences waiting for that 3-6-12 month psa blood draw between those on AS or post treatment. Fear is fear and in truth is scarier for those post treatment for an uptick in PSA may well mean their Pca is systemic. Meanwhile those on AS with an increase in PSA in all likelihood are still low risk with most treatment options still
open. Yes I know there are rare exceptions. Of course one obvious difference between the groups until blood draw day those on AS are still living life as before with medical science advancing with better and less invasive options coming online like I had.
As the ability to participate on AS with rare exceptions a blood draw and a DRE doesn't take a full day. A little inconvenient? Sure but compare that to living with lets say radical surgery effects. Even if only dry orgasms and ED pills results in still a lower quality of life compared to those on AS. And as study after study comes out, even those who do eventually need treatment for the majority after time on AS have the same results post treatment then they would've had if treated in a rush after dx years earlier. Except for the fact many have had a few more years of normalcy and for most die later with and not of PCa. Fear and knee jerk reactions to the C word need to be overcome eventually with logic. In time we'll see that more and more.
