Well, I'm back, and the reason for my continued PSA tests will now be clear.
As I stated in my previous post, my PSA count following the surgery was < 0.015 (cancer insignificant) in August, 2015.
The bad news is since then my cancer has been returning--and doubling even faster than before.
PSA scores have been as follows:
February 2016: 0.078
June 2016 : .340
September 2016: 1.070
I have decided to delay my next PSA test until the first week of January 2017, and am scheduled to have the C-11 choline test once again in mid-February 2017. If the test is in the 3.0 range (as expected) and if the cancer has not metastasized yet, I will schedule surgery in late-March to early-April, and this time if I am told not to do a follow-up scan I will ignore the insurance companies and do it anyway. I am convinced that salvage radiation would have cured me the first time--but of course, that would have cost the insurance companies more money.
P.S. New information for those who can't afford the C-11 Choline scan at the Mayo Clinic is that I just discovered today two different things:
(1) There is a new hospital in the USA that also does the C-11 Choline scan--it is the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Illinois; and
(2) Axumin has now been approved by the FDA (in May 2016) for regular PET scans (as a tracer) and scans done with this tracer are considered to be almost as accurate as those done by C-11 Choline. {Axumin is the brand name), (fluciclovine is the generic name), (FACBC is the previous clinical trial name). Right now I don't know if there is a place that has the tracer available, but there is a clinical trial being done in Los Angeles--To find current information about
availability of the Axumin PET Scan, call 1-855-AXUMIN1 (1-855-298-6461).
