Thanks for the quick and thoughtful replies! I really appreciate the helpfulness and kindness, especially about my family's adoption. It's a slow process, but we're excited and feel that God has blessed us very much to be able to do it!
My doctor didn't even bring up the possibility of an antibiotic course, and never mentioned the possibility of prostititis. He went right to the biopsy.
I'd say your urologist is out of line with reasonable investigation. Rushing to a biopsy after just one high psa reading. Completely unjustified.
Take a listen to this leader in the field regard situations just like yours
Listen to it all, or just start at about
the 7:30 mark where it talks about
psa jumping up and down.

If you can watch that and still insist on a quick biopsy, then at least you'll be informed.
I have watched my PSA jump up to 7.5 and drop back to 3.8 after merely waiting for second test.
My last test was 2.8.
Odds are greater than 50/50 that by just waiting perhaps 3 months, even without antibiotics, that your psa will drop back under 2.0. BTW, most prostititis is non-bacterial and will not be cured with antibiotics...
Also, much prostititis is asymptomatic... you don't even know you have it, but it can raise your psa greatly.
My 7.5 psa reading was accompanied by no symptoms, yet dropped almost 4 points in a few months.
That your dad was diagnosed at age 70 has little to do with you being in immediate danger at age 47.

Speaking of antibiotics, if I were to go on an antibiotic regimen just in case it might be some sort of infection, wouldn't that increase the likelihood of antibiotic resistance if I then eventually need a biopsy, as I mentioned above?
Thanks again for the help and support. I am trying to find out all of the info I can, in a desperate attempt to avoid this, but maybe ultimately I'm just fooling myself.
You are NOT "just fooling myself".
You are very likely being rushed unnecessarily into a biopsy.
