Sounds like a plan. Sometimes we get a little bit wrapped up in numbers here, arguing that this treatment is only 80% effective while that treatment is 85 percent effective, ignoring the fact that 80 percent is pretty good odds and 85 percent is only a bit better. Doctors usually like a man to be on the hormones for a couple of months before they start the radiation. It makes the cancer cells more sensitive to the radiation and makes the treatments work better, especially for high risk cases like you and me. This gives you a couple of months to talk to other radiation doctors with different machines if you want to.

Talking to a psychologist is probably a good idea. Most guys spend some time right after diagnosis running around with their hair on fire then they calm down and get on with things. A shrink can help you get past the hair-on-fire stage a bit faster.

The trick to minimizing the side effects of the Lupron shots and the radiation is to stay active and get lots of exercise. Both the shots and the radiation can make you tired but, oddly, the more you make yourself do the less tired you will get. And, if you are like me, while you are doing the radiation treatments make sure your wife watches the who-done-its with you on TV or at the movies. That way she can tell you who the bad guys were when the show is over and she wakes you up.
