Do not read if you have had treatment already

"I got the result of my recent MRI from the Dr. yesterday. He said it was "great." He indicated that the cancer is "certainly no worse than the last time" and "maybe even improved". He found the result "quite interesting." He recommended no biopsy and I don't need to see him for six instead of the usual three months.

This is the email I sent to my family and friends recently. I wanted to share it with forum members who have not yet been treated with radiation, chemo or surgery.
I have been on active surveillance since diagnosis in April 2013 and this marks for me a degree of success worth sharing I hope with others. To get three years on active surveillance and have my Dr. tell me it's great, for me is reassurance that all is well in my medical world. Maybe I can squeeze another three and maybe not, but from now on I consider myself to be ahead of the game and now playing with house money.
Before anyone gets too happy about all this I need to point out from the outset that for me, the key part of "active surveillance" was the active part. It's a long story, three years long, that I am happy to share with anyone who cares to be interested.

My first biopsy showed G3 in three cores.

Second biopsy 13 months later showed G6 in four cores.

Third biopsy 13 months later showed G6 in one core.

PSA hovering around 1 for quite while since starting on Finesteride. 4.70 when diagnosed.

Prostate volume from 137 when diagnosed to 40 at last biopsy.

AS has been right for me. AS is truly time will tell.

Thanks for sharing. You guys are my inspiration, as I am yet untreated, 2+ yrs after Dx. But just recently, PSA for the first time was higher than PSA at time of Dx. And frequent urination, very frequent, has become a real problem. But I am hanging in there, not freaking out, keeping a positive outlook for the future. Great to hear about you guys, who are beating it, and I am far from giving up.

Can I ask you, what do you attribute your success to?

Jaybee, I wouldn't get too worried about a psa rise. That can be due to bph. You need additional blood tests like fpsa and PHI to get a clearer picture. Beyond that, a good MRI, and another biopsy, but each is only justified if the lesser test suggests it.

A psa test, by itself, is an imperfect tool. Have more tests if it really worries you and your doctor.
