Hello Everyone,
Nothing against all of you, but I'm joining a club I'd hoped not to be a member of! Now I'm sentenced to correcting the people I speak with that it's Prostate NOT Prostrate!

Seriously a friend referred me to this forum, and I've read many posts. So happy to have found it. The stories are informative and encouraging. After having my urologist state that I should have surgery, I sought a 2nd and 3rd opinion at a renowned cancer treatment facility not too far away. I was led to a wonderful RO, and have decided on HDR BRACHY and EXBT. While the number of treatments is tedious, in the end I wanted to avoid surgery and its risks if possible. For now, HT hasn't been prescribed.

Have to wait until November to get this party started, but that's ok.

In the interest of full disclosure, allow me to state that I have a Master's Degree in English and was, at one time, an English teacher. However, I don't make it a practice to worry about grammar used on an internet forum, or even misspellings.

But, when a word such as "prostate" is so frequently used incorrectly (as in "prostrate"), it's indicative to me of the woeful lack of knowledge that most men have concerning this part of the male anatomy.

That's why I've often stated in the past that we need to be as focused on educating young men about this cancer-prone part of their bodies as women have been on educating young girls on topics such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer.

It would be interesting to poll American men to find out how many know (a) what a prostate gland is, and (b) where it's located in their bodies. I think the results would shock many of us.

Welcome aboard and keep us informed of your progress. I'm glad that you've found HW to be helpful in making decisions about treatment.

64, the club you are joining is a really crappy club, but despite that it has some pretty nice and helpful members. Welcome to the club Bro, and good luck with your treatment!

Hi When, sorry you had to join this club. Glad you had a chance to do your research and come up with a choice that you are comfortable with. I wish you luck with your HDRBT and IMRT. Keep us posted. Take care. -JR

When I was diagnosed, someone told me that for most men their prostate was like Bulgaria. They knew it existed, but only had a vague awareness of where it is and what it is known for.

On a serious note, welcome to our club whenim64. (Can I just call you 64? Even though you're not quite there yet?) I'm glad you found an RO you're comfortable with and I wish you success on your treatment. I also had the brachy/IMRT combo and it is tedious, but just keep moving along and soon you'll be looking in the rearview mirror at it. If you don't mind me asking, where did you have your HDR brachy?

Hello W64...welcome !...I think we are close in stats...and treatment...you had your HDR`s ?....mine would be scheduled 5 weeks into IGRT. If you had HDR`s , was it 2 sessions ? and any bad side effects or what?? Glad your here with us in this wonderfully awful club! Your information is important ..... David

I'm reminded of a book someone gave me when I was first DXed. I enjoyed it so much that I read the entire Adrian Mole series.

64, sorry you are a member, but you have found a great place for knowledge and support. I wish you the very best in your treatment. As for my prostate, it now lies prostrate in a lab somewhere, having being donated for research. Can't say that I miss it very much though!

Thanks for the welcome and the well wishes.

My treatment starts with BRACHY in November, and then 2 1/2 weeks of EBRT before another BRACHY. Ends with another 2 1/2 weeks of EBRT. All done at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.

Hi, pleased to meet you.
I am extremely happy that I have done what I have done for my acinar adenocarcinoma. I live with the fear that it has not quite been enough. My respect for the power of a single G4 cancer cell has significantly increased since I first encountered the term.

Hi, I am a 62 year old male, and I just had a biopsy performed because my PSA went from 7 to 15 in a year. The biopsy came back with a Gleason score of (3+3) 6 (2 of 8) Can I watchfully wait or should I be more aggressive

You will do very well. I had the same routine in 2010, though I was lucky enough to also have three years of ADT! Today, I appear to be cancer free and side effect free. Let me know how I might help you through.

Don't be in a rush as your biopsy says low risk, but it is a high PSA. Probably something else going on like an infection. Have you been prescribed any antibiotics (often Cipro for prostatitis)? Do you have a history of BPH? Something is going on in addition to some low risk cancer, so be diligent in finding out what. But based on your biopsy, nothing to get excited about let alone treat, based on cancer at this time. Will it become aggressive? You won't know unless and until it does. Being diligent, though, means to consider a formal Active Surveillance program to keep an eye on the. Talk to your urologist and see if the practice has a formal program, or where you can go for one.

Thanks for the reply, I was placed on Cipro for 30 days prior to the last PSA, it had no effect. I then had the biopsy

Hazel, You probably would get more replies if you had started your own thread, but that's OK.

Watchful waiting is usually for men with limited life expectancy for other reasons, and is not a course that I would recommend for you. Instead, you can join an active surveillance program, where you you will have additional and regular testing to ensure that it is appropriate for you. With a psa that high, I would suggest several more tests such as an mp-MRI, a PHI blood test, and an OncodtypeDX assay of your biopsy slides.

I find many misspellings on my own posts and blame it a lot on auto correct and the fact that my fingers just don't connect to those little screens very well. As far as grammar goes, I think the most important thing is the context of what is being discussed and not the use of correct grammar. We are, after all, here to offer support and not to point out others use or mis use of the english language.
