Finally drew a moose tag after 4 years. My son took the week off and we were planning to hunt all week. Got a 900 lb bull this morning and finally got it packed out by 3pm. Idaho has 1 lifetime moose, so I won't be hunting moose anymore. Hope the steaks are worth all the work.

John that is great. Wonderful you got to hunt with your son. Now he needs to get a tag for your next hunt. Now it's time to play golf the rest of the week.

My bucket list. Told my wife that I am just going to be camp cook. Though I will go to Leadville CO in November with son in hopes to bring down a Bull Elk. 308 is locked and loaded.

I agree. I have no problem with animals being reared and killed for food, but it worries me that people get pleasure from killing something.

I think it's great! As long as one kills for food and not only for sport. Having a connection to the food we eat, is sadly, something we have lost. Whether food comes from grains and vegetables grown on some remote farm; or cattle, pig, fowl or fish grown (as if they were vegetables) on some remote farm, we no longer fully appreciate our food. Anyone driving through California's central valley and seeing the huge and very smelly cattle farms might think it more humane to let cattle (or moose) live most of their life in the wild. But we are omnivores, and they are food, and few of us have the time to go shoot all our meals, so it is a moot point for most of us. When I eat meat, I try to be thankful for the lives those animals gave up for me, at least acknowledging the sacrifice. Hunting for one's food creates memories of the live animal that was there, and the effort it took to hunt it - more tributes to the animal's life than the assembly-line slaughter at the cattle ranch.

I do feel sad for Rocky ;-)

I don't hunt, but I don't object to those who do for food or for necessary wildlife management. That said, I was at a bluegrass festival up in Maine a decade or so ago and the guy camped next to us said he'd be making moose stew the next day and would save me some. My vegetarian wife said no thanks. I asked him if he shot it himself. He said "No, it was roadkill." He was animal control officer in his county and said if someone hit a moose and lived they had first dibs, but if they didn't want it it was his. I now attest from personal experience that roadkill moose stew is really good -- like very lean beef.

It's a culture thing. I've hunted and fished since I was 12. No pleasure from killing anything, learned that lesson in Viet Nam, stopped hunting for 35 years. I do get pleasure and challenge from the hunt and being outdoors. I've caught over 1,000 marlin and never kept one. I catch hundreds of trout a year and released all but the two mounts on my wall. It's all about being close to nature and the challenge.
Unfortunately I can't release the game I shoot, but my neighbors appreciate the meat, nothing goes to waste.
Alan, Plenty of squirrels around here, but I haven't seen one with wings yet. I'll keep my eye out, and don't worry I won't shoot him.

Hopefully you non-hunters will one day realize that every time you eat at Micky D's or pick up that steak at the grocery store that many of those animals were raised on factory farms or in feed lots knee deep in their own fecal matter until the day they are marched the the doors of a slaughter house hit with a bolt in the head, shackled and hoisted by their legs into the air and disemboweled why their hearts are still beating. Yeah, that's humane. Or how about veal.... From the day they are born their legs are staked to the ground so the muscles will not get tough and a pile of feed is shoved in their face. Antibiotics, growth hormone, fed saw dust mixed with chicken crap. How about dairy farms where the calves are killed at birth so the cow will keep giving milk. I hunt for my food and I respect the animals I eat. Just saying

As I mentioned, my concern over hunting is not about the animal, it's about the mentality of a human who derives pleasure from watching another living, and defenceless, creature being killed. Just cannot understand that. And I don't accept the concept of "the hunt".

If that is the pleasure, then by all means use your skill to track and stalk it, but no need to kill it, photograph it instead.

Anyway, probably verging on unacceptable discussions here, so I will bow out.

Growing up I hunted and fished a lot with my father. After dad died hunting wasn't the same. I remember the last deer I shot .... while I was gutting it out I thought "why"? Couldn't come up with an answer.

Living in Colorado I find it easy to experience wildlife. In Estes Park during the fall the elk walk through town! Beautiful creatures.

"flywithme", you may be from Colorado and already know this, but running the risk of telling you something you already know ..... Leadville is at over 10,000 feet of elevation. If you are coming up from a lower elevation, give yourself a day or two to adjust to the thin air before doing a lot of strenuous stuff ..... like walking. Also, I like eating at the Golden Burro, visiting the mining hall of fame, walking through the Tabor opera house, visiting Baby Doe's Matchless mine, golfing at Mt.Massive (highest golf course in the world), and hiking around Tourqoise Lake. Enjoy, and best of luck on the hunt.

Guys, whether you hunt or not, or approve of hunting or not, IMO we should be celebrating with John T about living life on HIS terms. Which is what GFMPH (Good For My Prostate Health) is all about!

Never eaten moose that I know of. However, I do like me a slice or two of deer summer sausage on a ritz cracker.....

John T congratulations on the bull that is really awesome man. I want to let you know it was not my intent to hijack this thread for my rant against factory farms. Sometimes I just can't help myself. I feel Strongly about it.

Chask.. I hear you man. I do know some guys that just go out and seem to want to shoot anything that moves. Those guys bother me a lot. If I didn't eat The wild game I would not hunt. Amanda and I eat very little beef or pork from the grocery store. In fact Amanda doesn't eat any. She was a vegetarian before I met her. I converted her. Our diet is almost exclusively wild game wild caught fish and organic poultry

June Foray, the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, just turned 99 last week. She also voiced Natasha and Nell in the Dudley Do-Right cartoon. That's my irrelevant fact for the day.

PS I saw a moose in Nova Scotia this summer. Afterwards talking to some of the locals, I realized some had gone their whole lives without ever seeing a moose...

Glad to see you had a good hunt and I hope you get your Elk. Being from Alaska I have no problem with people hunting as long as they salvage the meat.

My wife and I were in Québec and drove to Mauricie Provincial Park, a large fauna reservation and pure northwoods experience well into the interior of Québec. She was hoping to sight a moose. We saw moose warning signs along the road, and scanned the marsh areas hoping for a sighting yet, sadly, nothing. We came out of the park area to the outfitting town at the park edge and I stopped for gas. Pulling to the opposite pump came a pickup pulling a trailer and in each was a moose, on the way to rendering or taxidermy*. I told my wife sitting in the car to be careful what she asks for because she was about to have a double sighting. She sulked for the rest of the day.

*road kill?

When we were in Alaska in 2010, we were driving around Anchorage when we saw a Moose actually running onto the highway via the entrance ramp. He realized his mistake, and quickly ducked into the woods, but it was pretty funny, seeing this massive moose running "with traffic".

In Skagway, out of town about five miles, we also wondered why a semi truck ahead of us was slowing down on the highway. Sure enough, here comes an elk stampede, right across the highway in front of the semi. Wow!

Well done John T - while we don't hunt, we are avid fishermen for bluegills. DH is recognized by the Michigan DNR as a Master Angler! (OK we got lucky with a 10 1/2 inch bluegill once....)

Summer sausage is any sausage that can be kept without refrigeration. Summer sausage is usually a mixture of pork and other meat such as beef or venison. Summer sausage can be dried or smoked, and while curing ingredients vary significantly, curing salt is almost always used.


So, summer sausage is a preserved sausage that doesn't require refrigeration, so you can eat it the next summer...if it lasts that long.
