1 day 'til Movember starts!Greetings Mo Bros! Thanks to Todd for joining our ranks on Friday. I had a great weekend in Philadelphia where I personally experienced yet another parallel (once again, in church!) to
the “spirit” of Movember, which—after I share with you—will hopefully also give you additional strength to make the most of your “opportunities” to
share a word with others about prostate cancer when you are asked the question, “Why are you growing a moustache?”
Being a Mo Bro will take courage. Fortitude. Perhaps some faith. Certainly bravery, to speak up and help raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. It would be so much easier for you to NOT PARTICIPATE in Movember. That’s the path many others have taken. It would be so much easier to NOT grow that goofy looking moustache and have to deal with all that. It would be so much easier to NOT invite the conversations—with folks you perhaps barely know—to talk about
Prostate Cancer. Face it, prostate cancer overtreatment has given PC a “bad name,” and here we are inviting face-to-face conversation about
this uncomfortable topic outside of the comfortable confines of HW/PC. Good for you.
So, here's my weekend story on
the "spirit" of Movember...
I visited my daughter who lives in NW Philadelphia…I’ll include a few of the
location details for those of you familiar with Philly. After I arrived from O'Hare Friday, we had a great Mexican dinner in the Fairmont neighborhood, then went on the haunted house tour of the
Eastern Penitentiary. The Penitentiary was built around 175 years ago, and was in full use until the 1970s when it was largely abandoned (and is now being kept in a state of "preserved ruin"). Great place for a professional haunted house because it’s even a little scary to walk by in the daytime; then we caught the end of Friday’s Cubs/World Series game (boo) in a bar across the street. Saturday afternoon, we went to the 76ers game—they got crushed by the Hawks; then Saturday night we went to a play downtown (Walnut Street Theater) after eating at Talula’s Garden—excellent restaurant. Sunday morning (yesterday), she took me to her new church. In a very similar experience to what I reported in the
opening post of this thread, it was there that I found a powerful message which helps give resolve to the Mo Bros as we approach Movember. Here’s how it went for me...
The pastor was wrapping up a several-week lesson on what he called “ghost stories” (appropriate, I suppose, for the Halloween season) about
the “holy ghost.” This lesson focused on the Bible’s book of Acts, which was a letter by the apostle Peter some years after Jesus’s death to fledgling Christians who were struggling with their faith and their resolve. Peter recalled, in the letter, that in the first several weeks following Jesus’s crucifixion he and the other disciples were really lost, and looking for a sign, for some guidance on what to do next, and for a new leader to emerge. Jesus appeared (40-days after His resurrection) to Peter and a group of others, and told them to have patience and faith because the holy spirit would “fill you with power to witness for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” The men tried to ask more questions, but Jesus arose into the clouds and was gone…and they remained filled with uncertainty.
But just a few days later, Peter found himself in the center of a large group in Jerusalem. Peter, you may know, had been a fisherman—probably one of the most solitary of professions—and had certainly not been a public speaker, and probably not comfortable standing in front of others. But at that moment, he felt moved, and filled with the power, to seize the “opportunity,” and he arose and began speaking about
Jesus. Peter had the “holy spirit” within him, and gave his first and what turned out to be the sermon-of-a-lifetime to the crowd about
the death, burial and the resurrection of Jesus. And the rest, as they say, is history…the Christian church was started right then and there.
This lesson recalled my own past experiences with Movember, and the “spirit” of Movember.
The month is all about being empowered and seizing “opportunities” to speak a word about prostate cancer and men’s health issues. The moustache growth
creates the opportunity, but it is really
up to you to do with it what you will. There is no script
. Just speak as you are so moved, to raise awareness and educate others about
this sometimes difficult-to-talk-about
topic.
Here’s the list of brave souls from HW/PC who have stepped forward to say that they are going to
participate in Movember, and help to "change the face" of men's health issues:
