Dads last scan results showed no progression in the bones and still no soft tissue involvement, which was positive news. His PSA has risen again so the doctor has started him on a 6 month cycle of Radium 223. I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on this treatment? Who has been treated with it, what were your results/side effects?

The trade name for this treatment is called Xofigo..Google will tell you everything you want to know..Please put together a signature (top left, MyProfile) so we can see where your Dad stands on his journey...Age, PSA history, treatment history, Gleason score, that kind of stuff..

There are a few guys on this board who been treated with Radium 223 and have enjoyed good success with it with few side-effects..Hopefully they will check in and answer your questions.There are other treatments for Stage 4 prostate cancer (Zytiga, Xtandi, Provenge, chemo) but there is no set order of treatment. Each case is different. Again, welcome and check in often..

My husband is half way thru the 6 radium 223 treatments. He has done fairly well-not sure what it is doing if anything. He continues to have pain and feels very weak. It is important to watch lab results closely, my husband has not had to have any blood transfusions but I know of others on this treatment that have had to due to drop in blood cell counts. We see his oncologist next Monday with labs. Best wishes to your dad.

Hello Kate and welcome to HW. You'll find quite a number of daughters and wives here.
My DH had just one round of xofigo, and he was fairly sick from it. But it surrendered help with his bone mets. Good luck and keep us posted.

Kate...I did notice some pain relief while on 223...especially in my back. It was almost immediate after my first infusion. I also did a clinical study where I was gonna get another 6 rounds on 223 for a total of 12.....but I ended up needing chemo which disqualified me for the Clinical study so I got a total of 9. No SEs at all that I could tell.

Thank you for your replies. Dad is suffering badly from fatigue and pain, this started when he began his Radium 223 infusions. He has stopped the Prednisone, which he was taking to stop the side effects of the chemotherapy and the Zytiga. I am wondering whether he should still be taking the Prednisone whilst having the Radium 223? Would it help with the side effects of Radium 223?

I think the biggest concern with spinal mets is compression fracture. He should take care not to fall.
Your dad's PCa is similar to what my DH has been dealing with, but his bone mets were more widespread and his psa was higher too. Don't get too caught up in a prognosis of survival. Everyone responds differently to tx. Gary has been hanging tough for six years with a whole host of different tx's, and he has had liver mets for a year and a half too. There several more options after jevtana, so keep faith.
BTW, I don't think prednisone is prescribed with xofigo.

Hi Kate,
The problem with bone mets is pain that might become really hight. Radium233 it's worth a try and it's targeting much better bone mets than radio. I have no direct experience with radium 233 as my fathet never managed to get it but I saw the effect of bone mets and spine mets so what I can tell you is that keeping bone mets under control is critical for qualify of life (both pain and if in the spine also to keep on walking). As other stated do not look at life expectation ... that's random number ... your father is relatively new to PC treatments and this is pretty good for him as he has still plenty of treatment to have and to which his body will respond well. Not an expert but what I would ensure is that Radium233 is given along with ht or anither therapy to keep testosterone down in the meanwhile (testosterone feed the PC , ht, then zatyga,xtandi in a way or the other bock fuel for the PC) .
