I got external beam radiation therapy in July - August of 2013 (about 80 Gy in 40 treatments). I got the expected side effects the RO had warned me about - cramping, the 'radiation craps' (lots of effort for small results) and a substantial increase in bleeding from my hemorrhoids. When I got my regularly scheduled colonoscopy this past July, the gastroenterologist found my colon was covered with large blisters of gas. He poked one and it deflated. He took pictures of them and included those in the procedure report of which I got a copy. He said that - while uncommon - these are not extraordinary. He told me that they would eventually go away. I get daily cramping and some discomfort still, and my hemorrhoids still bleed a lot every few days.
I have frequent explosive bowel movements in the morning, but they are pretty regular so I have worked that into my schedule. Sometimes there is quite a bit of pain and cramping involved. I have an extremely healthy diet, take a bunch of supplements and intermittently use a probiotic to keep things a little less exciting.
The nadir for the appearance of radiation side effects is supposed to be about 3 years after treatment ends, then they should fade away over the next few years. A friend who had radiation 30 years ago says she is still recovering from that now. I seem to have peaked this past month myself, as the SE's got pretty bad in the beginning of Nov but have backed off somewhat now.
