Survey only for those whose FATHER had PC

This stems from my other thread regarding the heredity factor in PC. We know it is a factor. It may be a small factor.
I mentioned that I recall hearing/reading that the DEGREE is not inherited at all.
In other words, if your father had PC there is a slight increased risk that you may have PC. But if your father was a G6, there is no increased risk that if you get PC it will be a G6.

Again, this is just something I vaguely recall and I might not be remembering it correctly (or it may/may not be true).

So, let's survey our group. I bet many of you have a family history of PC.

But let's just concentrate on those of you whose father had PC.

Mel, my dad had PC but didn't really share his G score, PSA or any other details. Just that he was getting radiation (it seemed to work). Therefore I voted "no G score" though he may have had one and I just didn't know it.

They called his PC a Gleason 6 which was either misread at the time or the criteria has changed over the years.

The Gleason system was modified 2005 (driven by Epstein). As a consequence it has been a significant shift towards higher Gleason gradings after 2005. If your fathers biopsies would be re-read today he would have been given a higher Gleason. Comparisons over time is hence not advisable (which is bad).

I don't know what my dad's g-score was..or even if he had one. He was diagnosed in 1992, was treated with whole gland cryotherapy, followed by HT. Then, he developed mets on his ureters in about 2002/2003, then finally spinal mets in 2004.

My Grandfather died of PC in 1956, a fact I never knew until my DX in 2007. My Father was DX with PC, but had the crown Jewells removed and PC was not a factor in his death in 1995 from heart issues. Sorry, he never told me was his Gleason score was. Mine was 4 in 1988, and climbed to 10 in 2007, was 11 at time of surgery.

My dad was diagnosed around 2002, age 72. All he knows is his doctor said, "There's cancer in there and it will have to come out.". My dad said, "Ok". And that's all he knows. No G score, no staging, nothing. Just blind trust in the urologist's proclamation. My dad's a smart guy, but so many people just accept what a doctor says.

Blows my mind! I am not wired like that, obviously.

As a G9, I suspect mine is actually higher than his was, but can't confirm it.

Interesting results. I am clearly not alone in not knowing my Dad's G-score.

Also, it seems for those who have that information, we are doing worse than our Dads.

However, keep in mind that those of us on HW tend to have more serious cases to begin with.

Also, small sample for sure.

I can't participate in the actual survey, as my father has never been diagnosed (at least not yet!). Just my luck! At 51 when diagnosed, I obviously had it as a 3+4. My paternal great-grandfather had it, but died of other issued in '66. My paternal grandfather died of other causes in '77 in his late 50s, so no idea there if he had undiagnosed PCa or not.

I still can't believe my father has lucked out so far @ 72 (he's always had a rabbit's foot up his ***!), though his brother, my uncle got it and has been fine since surgery via the perineum in '97.

This brings up a question that I've never thought about till now...when did TRUS biopsy become commonplace, and when did G scores start coming along as diagnostic?

TRUS -- early 1990's, but typically only 6-cores then. The biopsies were done before that, but they were "finger guided" before being ultrasonically assisted.

Gleason -- developed in the 1960's, and quickly adopted as the best of several competing systems


There was little doubt that Gleason scores of prostate biopsies performed since the 1960's were assessed (otherwise, what's the point?), but a) it's very possible that the urologist never told the patient what the Gleason score was "in the old days," of b) many men of our grandfather's or father's generation treated long ago have forgotten what their Gleason score was, because it wasn't as well-known a thing as it is today, or c) our fathers didn't pass on to us what their Gleason score was

My Dad was diagnosed in the early 1990's. Detection came later than it would today. I don't know his score, but he had a radical (pre-robotic) and they removed many lymph nodes. He was about 5 years older than me when he had surgery. In the years since, he has had HT but i am not sure if it is tied to PCa or other issues.

He told me his grandfather had PCa, and my Mom's dad had PCa. My Dad's father died from injuries related to a utility company accident at a fairly young age.

I don't know if the heredity link is legit or not, but given my diagnosis at 56 and my Dad's results at 62, i did not want to wait. My guess is he would have been diagnosed similar to me at 56 had it been detected.
