This site has been so helpful to me and my husband Rick. So I have another question that has been bothering us the past few days and hoping you can help. My husband had brachytherapy Feb 7, 2017. At first, frequency was a huge issue but gradually he was able to go 1.5 hours during day and once or twice at night. He is taking Flomax and was also taking Advil. The last two days he is back to every 15-30 minutes during the day and we are worried. Flow or leakage isn't an issue. He has continued to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, no coffee or chocolate or alcohol. Very little burning. Is it possible that the Flomax would cause the increased frequency? Or what might be going on? Thank you for your responses.

Flomax should help with that. Gary was having the same problem, mostly because he wasn't able to empty his bladder. shakehead
Is Rick only able to go a little at a time?
His Dr put him on a drug called cardura. First he had a diagnostics to see how much he was able to go.

He can take two Flomax. He is drinking way too much water - why is he doing that? limit alcohol and fruit juices too, in fact, no liquids after dinner so as to sleep through the night. If two flomax don't work, ask his uro for a different alpha blocker (his Uro probably has samples). I found that Rapaflo worked a lot better - everyone's different. As long as he can keep peeing, it's not a serious problem. It is almost always transient. If he can't pee, go to the ER and get catheterized.

Thank you for your replies. So, it looks as if it is not the Flomax that is creating the frequency, but in fact he may need to take more Flomax or a different drug so that he doesn't feel like he has to go again 15 minutes after he has gone. Okay, that's good. And Tall Allen, Rick does feel as if he is sloshing with water but the radiation nurse told him he had to keep drinking that to keep the waterworks working and flush "bad stuff" out of his system. Should we challenge that? He is able to pee each time, although not a huge amount when it is only 15 minute intervals. We will definitely call Cancer Centre on Monday but when you are worried about something the weekend seems like a long time.

OMG- I think you should tell the RO what the radiation nurse said, so she does not harm other people. I assure you, there is no "bad stuff" to "flush out." That's probably some of the worst advice I've heard. He should only drink if he is thirsty, and even then, sip slowly - don't gulp - so that the body has time to respond to the brain when fluid requirements are met. There is a lot of water already in all of our foods.

Thank you. Talking to oncologist tomorrow. Things have been better today since cutting back on water intake.

I'd have to pee every 15 -30 minutes if I drank that much too!

Pee in cup for a day and measure your volume. If it is much more than ~2000 ml, ~60-70 ounces you need to talk with your doc and cut back.

I had a similar experience. I thought the Flomax was making me go so much after Brachy I stopped taking it for a few days but it was the fact I wasn't emptying. They really need to tell us this stuff.
I agree with Allen..what could you possibly have to flush out (my doc never said drink water)? When I was on chemo I had a strict water consumption regime but never on radiation except for before EBRT daily doses.
