Everybody here, and everybody not here, who has been handed this messed up card (would have said ****ed up but I bet it would be edited out) (and it was) called prostate cancer is my hero.

The real heroes are the ones who came before us, who tried the things that didn't work, who took the risks and tried the new things in their time, sometimes successfully, more often without success. Add the researchers who keep digging for those bits of Truth with a capital T, who keep looking for the answers despite all the evidence that there is no answer.

They are the heroes. For some of us, they are our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers. They showed the way, and frequently suffered terribly along their path, in ways that most of us cannot imagine.

There are many heroes on this forum but I think we are short of public personalities stepping forward. Given the prevalence of the disease there must be many of them who we never use their celebrity status to speak about the disease. That being said, I can't blame them as I realize that it takes a fair amount of courage to take on the spokesman role for a fairly personal ailment. As far as public figures, I would have to give the most kudos to Ben Stiller from an American (and therefore international) perspective. From a Canadian perspective, for public figures, I would have to give kudos to businessman and former Dragon's Den personality (Canadian version of "Shark Tank") Brett Wilson and deceased politician Jack Layton.

Instead of the term hero with this community, I tend to think in terms of courage and admiration and someone who I hope I can emulate if ever life gives me a case of lemons like it has for David (Purgatory). We all have gone though our own special hell with this dreaded disease but it sure seems David was given a few extra doses than most. And every time it seems like he is down for the count, he comes roaring back and laughs in the face of those demons that want to take him down. I honestly don't know if I could handle the continued battles and hell David faces each and every day, but he certainly gives me hope and encouragement that if it ever does that I can follow in the footsteps of a man I deeply admire.

There are so many here that provide inspiration and hope and many do so even though they know that there is a timestamp lingering off somewhere. Everybody has a different perspective and different disease but if I had any hero at all, it would be for those who have fallen but never gave up hope because that is really all we have.
